Studies have shown that it helps UC - not Crohns though. In fact I think they

said it makes Crohns worse. Don't have time to find the research now but it

should come up if you google it.

Turet, who owns the original Long Island SCD list (but who has

been very inactive because of family issues) is/was a smoker. She

mentioned that every time she tried to stop smoking she ended up in a

flare.

So yes, there may be some validity to the statement -- but I personally

think that if you aren't a smoker, the health issues associated with

smoking are not something you want to add, if you have IBD already.

In other words, if you are a smoker, it may be hard to stop without

having an IBD flare.

If you aren't a smoker, I think you'd be much better off with something

like LDN instead of tobacco.

The stress from quitting would probably cause a flare. Cigarette smoke has been

cited by several as being a contributor to developing Crohn's. See

That's what the gastro who diagnosed me 15 years ago said. After my stint in the hospital I quit a long time smoking habit and told the doc who said to me, too bad because this is one disease that it actually helps !!! Of course I started smoking again and have since read all the research that smoking is a flare trigger for Crohn's though it does help UC.

Someone on Healing Crow did this - she says the smoking gave her back

her life after 30 years of debilitating IBD. She's happy with her

decision.

And I believe she wasn't a smoker to begin with.

Me too.

Am I correct in thinking that smoking also boosts endorphins? Or did

I just make that up? (VBG)

Don't know, and have no desire to find out. I can't be around tobacco

smoke -- I get a major respiratory infection with just a few minutes

exposure.

Harry smoked a pipe when we first met. I actually like the smell of a

good pipe tobacco. But I can't tolerate it. So, Harry quit. I didn't ask

him to. He chose to. Said he didn't want to make me sick, so he just

decided he wouldn't smoke around me. Well, pretty soon, we were together

all the time, so it was easier to give up the tobacco than to give me up.
