SCD and cholesterol

Speaking of coconut oil- in what can you substitute it for butter? And what ratios? I do want to try to use it more, jsut need to figure out how. Thanks!It's good in baking - but I might go for half coconut oil and half butterat least at first. (For people who cook kosher food, it's a greatway to bake pareve goods. ) I use 1:1 ratio. Wow, I posed a question and got all kinds of interesting advice.

I am certainly not blaming SCD for cholesterol- it is one of the healthiest

diets around but it is important to make good choices within the diet. Some

people can eat more high cholesterol foods than others and just do fine. Yes, my

doc has subtyped my cholesterol, and thankfully it is not the high risk type. I

have a great doc who is very picky and thorough, but I know he loves statins and

tends to put a lot of people on them. I am trying very hard to NOT be one of

those people (LOL). He did a great check up. I am not opposed to taking

medication if needed, but if I can do something to avoid it, I will try that

first. Thanks for all the great tips-

You're 15, skinny, you need these fats. Very rarely are kids found with high

cholesterol and it is usually hereditary or due to obesity. I don't think it is

something you should worry about when choosing foods now.

Also, you need good fats to make your brain function at optimum

levels - so it is good for school.

Thanks so much PJ! My parents tell me that too, but it really helps having someone outside my family confirm this. Thanks for your reply! Good to know =) Actually, my brain has been going through very foggy spells where I just cant seem to think! If you MUST take statins, you must also supplement with CoQ10, CoEnzyme

Q10.

My mother is on statins. She was being very difficult about taken pills

so my father skipped giving her any vitamins, including her CoQ10. Within

a weak, she was crying all the time about how much her legs hurt, and her

whole body hurt. I asked him about her vitamins -- and he said he'd

stopped them because she was so upset about taking any pills. I told him

that if he had to open the pills and mix it with something, he should get

the CoQ10 down her. He has... and she's stopped crying about how badly

she hurts.

Another supplement that lowers cholesterol besides the flush-free niacin and

pantothene already mentioned, is policosanol.

My current cholesterol level is terrible (280 something). I refuse to go on

statins though. I think it will probably get better once my body heals more.

I've read triglycerides are the real indicator of future heart issues. Mine are

just a bit out of the range (160 something).

I've always had high cholesterol. I'm 5'5 " and weight about 93 pounds right now

(100 is what I typically have weighed in the past), and still have a high 200's

cholesterol level. But, I'm not particularly worried about it after reading all

of the " cholesterol myths " articles.

This is horrible. What I love about this board is the vigilance of everyone

here. I will add that most doctors really do try to do what they think is best

for their patients. Many of them are extremely busy, and it's nearly impossible

to keep up with a busy practice and read every medical journal out there in

detail-so they may not pick up on all of this. I also think that there are life

saving medications out there, and that is a good thing.

But pharmaceuticals is big business. They employ " drug reps " who visit doctors

during a busy day to tell them about new drugs and offer them samples for their

patients. Of course they present it all in a positive light. Physicians in

private practice do not benefit directly from the sales of these drugs, but the

drug companies do. For any corruption in research, I blame the drug companies.

As for the busy docs-managed care and the high price of malpractice and office

overhead is one reason they are so busy all the time- just trying to keep their

practice going.

Now to SCD. It's hard to compete with big businesses who hire drug reps. I would

love to see more people try this diet, get good results- and then tell others.

It seems like it is catching on. I am also appreciative for the honest drug

research and the US has a history of having one of the best health care systems.

Sadly, nothing seems to be immune from corruption. Again, the vigilance of this

group is impressive.

Now to SCD. It's hard to compete with big businesses who hire drug reps. I would love to see more people try this diet, get good results- and then tell others. It seems like it is catching on. I am also appreciative for the honest drug research and the US has a history of having one of the best health care systems. Sadly, nothing seems to be immune from corruption. Again, the vigilance of this group is impressive.

You'd think that hundreds of SCDers can't be wrong.Does anyone know how many people are on this diet overall? It'd be an interesting statistic.Hopefully, someday, someone will do the testing to " legitimize " it. Until then, it works, and that's enough for me.

This is horrible. What I love about this board is the vigilance of everyone here. I will add that most doctors really do try to do what they think is best for their patients. Many of them are extremely busy, and it's nearly impossible to keep up with a busy practice and read every medical journal out there in detail-so they may not pick up on all of this. I also think that there are life saving medications out there, and that is a good thing.

But pharmaceuticals is big business. They employ " drug reps " who visit doctors during a busy day to tell them about new drugs and offer them samples for their patients. Of course they present it all in a positive light. Physicians in private practice do not benefit directly from the sales of these drugs, but the drug companies do. For any corruption in research, I blame the drug companies. As for the busy docs-managed care and the high price of malpractice and office overhead is one reason they are so busy all the time- just trying to keep their practice going.
