Guest guest
Hi all, Today was the first time I've been able to see my doc since starting SCD 3 months ago. He's actually a chiropractic neurologist, and VERY nutrition oriented. Can anyone help me with these issues he has? Bifidobacterium (sp?) - he can't understand why this is not allowed as he thinks it a crucial thing for kids to put in their guts Sorbitol/Xylitol - doesn't understand why these are not allowed. He said they are sugar alcohols...the bad bugs eat them b/c they think they're sugars, but they're really not and it kills them. He thinks they are an important part of killing off the bad guys Fructose - he doesn't understand why we can't have fructose if we can have fruit, and we can have honey which is 100% fructose Detoxing - he was having trouble seeing where we were helping the detox to happen - said we really need something like bentonite clay to help the phase II detox happen. Can anyone offer me some help with this? I did forward a bunch of links to him from the BTVC knowledge base on these topics. This is tough for me b/c I give this guy the credit for saving my Dad's life. He was diagnosed with salivary gland cancer (HUGE tumor) and was given 6 months to live. He did go through radiation and chemo, but judging by the doctors' complete amazement that he is alive, I attribute his survival to the supps/vitamins that my chiro put him on. The cancer is completely GONE. I've been seeing this chiro for years and really trust him. He had just never heard of SCD. Can you see my dilemma in not taking his advice? I guess I'm just looking for someone to help me understand why it's so important to avoid these things that he had some issues with. He was especially passionate about the bifido stuff. Thanks so much! Kelley W. SCD 2/16/09 , 8, mild asperger's symptoms Sara, 11, sals/phenols intol? yeast?
Guest guest
Bifidobacter has been linked to bad reactions. A more unproven link is that Bifidobacter produces an enzyme (pullulanase) that may be similar enough to the bacterial enzyme that has been suggested as one of the triggers of the autoimmune reaction. That is, it may be a direct trigger for the Crohn's immune reaction. Sorbitol/Xylitol - These do not kill bacteria. Xylitol has been reported to reduce cavities because it seems to not be consumed by the common cavity-causing bacteria. They are not killed - they just don't grow well. Other bacteria happily eat Xylitol. Sorbitol is actually used to culture certain bacteria. Fructose as an ingredient on a food label usually implies high fructose corn syrup which also contains many other sugars. It is the other sugars/starches that cause problems. Detox is a somewhat vague idea that is used to describe the process of altering the state of the gut's ecology. The idea suggests that toxins are flushed out of the system as a part of normal elimination. I can see where your Chiro would see a need for bentonite if toxins were systemic, but I think that the toxins are bacterial byproducts that are removed by the normal process of excretion and waste elimination (once those bacteria are starved out of the gut ecosystem). I also think that a lot of what is called detox is due to the healing process proceeding to go through the proper inflammation/cleansing/healing cycle once the cause of ongoing inflammation (certain bacteria) is removed. The following is my take on the process: the diet initially removes all food sources that cause the bacterium to secrete the enzyme that causes the problem. Once this source of inflammation is removed, then normal healing can take place. Once healing has happened, the gut lining returns to its normal barrier function and keeps the gut contents from triggering the immune system. That is why more challenging foods can be added after a time. The gut lining is able to prevent the immune system from being triggered unless a large concentration of the trigger enzyme is present or some environmental challenges cause increased gut permeability - allowing contact between the immune system and gut contents. > > Hi all, > Today was the first time I've been able to see my doc since starting SCD 3 > months ago. Apparently there are all sorts of bifidobacterium and while some strains are linked to a negative reaction, others are linked to positive ones. That is why Natasha McBride (or whatever her name is) has okayed them for the SCDiet. And let's recall the fact that Elaine acknowledged being no kind of an expert on strains of bacteria and admitting that she did not have all the evidence for the various bifido strains. She took a conservative approach that would help the most people, all of whom had very different reactions, and she stuck with what she knew absolutely to be efficacious. > Sorbitol/Xylitol - These do not kill bacteria. However, Bifidus is inclined to overgrow like crazy in the guts of those of us with digestive issues. Many SCDers have reported major issues with bifidus. I, myself, have inadvertently eaten some (in yogurt) on two occasions. The first time, I was vilely ill for days. THe second time, when I realized what I'd done, I scarfed a bunch of acidophilus, and managed to head off the reaction. >> Sorbitol/Xylitol - doesn't understand why these are not allowed. He said they are sugar alcohols...the bad bugs eat them b/c they think they're sugars, but they're really not and it kills them. He thinks they are an important part of killing off the bad guys << Sure -- it feeds the bad bugs and may kill them. But if it kills the bad ones, it also kills the good ones. Sugar alcohols can also cause diarrhea and gut cramps -- read the labels on anything sweetened with the junk, and you'll find that diarrehea and gas is one of the side effects. We IBS/IBDers sure as Hades don't need that! >> Fructose - he doesn't understand why we can't have fructose if we can have fruit, and we can have honey which is 100% fructose << Honey is not 100% fructose -- maybe a third of it is fructose. http://everest.ento.vt.edu/~fell/apiculture/HoneyComposition/honey_composition.htm There's a major difference between refined fructose (which may very well contain other sugars which are hard to digest) and a whole food. It's like the difference between date sugar and dates. Dates are a whole food (like fruit and honey) but date sugar is a refined product. Also, I will note that some SCDers have found that they need to go with lower fructose fruits, and use honey only in small amounts, if at all. >> Detoxing - he was having trouble seeing where we were helping the detox to happen - said we really need something like bentonite clay to help the phase II detox happen. << Our bodies require specific nutrients to function properly. If there's glitch in the absorption of nutrients, the breakdown of toxic stuff to less toxic which can be gotten rid of won't occur. With SCD, we provide nutrient-rich foods which our bodies can process and absorb -- something which can't happen when we're suffering from malabsorption. Cure the malabsorption, and the body can detox itself without artificial aids. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Thank you all for these responses! My chiro is very open to " me teaching him " (how completely cool is that??) but of course I don't know how to! You guy helping me understand where the issues lie at least give me enough info to generate a good discussion with him. When my daughter was younger, she was diagnosed as being lactose intolerant by my Pediatrician. When I started going to the chiro he told me she wasn't lactose intolerant she'd been suffering with an intestinal infection. He put her on Metagenics Ultra Flora DF (NOT SCD compliant) and she improved beautifully (and her eczema on her face completely cleared up). We obviously didn't go far enough at that point. (We've been traveling for 2 years and I haven't been able to work with him.) She has yeast issues (just judging by the coating on her tongue) and the eczema on her face and arms (little bumps - keratosis pilaris??) This is one of the products he'd like her to go on now. Obviously not OK on this diet. He'd also like her on the Bifoviden ID, which is also illegal. It was interesting...I was reading that bifidobacteria is present in breastfed babies. My girls were not breastfed (didn't know any better at that time) so I know that has something to do with their issues. Maybe they didn't have that good bacteria from the start? Thanks again. I really appreciate the feedback! Kelley W. SCD 2/16/09 , 8, mild asperger's symptoms Sara, 11, sals/phenols intol? Guest guest
What saddens me here is that the interest in diets and nutrition seems to come mainly from those in the alternative health field with a few, but rare MD's involved. I see many people here who have traditional docs but also see other health care providers- integrative medicine, chiros and so on. I live in a small town without access to a large variety of providers. The MD's in my area are excellent, for the most part, and very traditional. The alternative providers...a bit iffy IMHO. I wish the MD community would take a closer look at SCD. My own doc dismisses diet altogether. My own preference is to look at all possible ways of staying healthy. I feel out on a limb with this, but I keep at it because of the dedication and results of this group. PJ > > > > > >> Bifidobacter has been linked to bad reactions. Guest guest
It saddens me, too. The more I learn, the more I feel that docs will never be trained to think nutritionally b/c it will put them and big pharma out of business. I am very thankful that we found our chiro years ago, before my daughter was diagnosed with Asperger's...he is also a neurologist and has a son with Asperger's, so I know he's motivated to look at alternatives. My husband and I have talked about this a lot the past couple days and decided we need to give SCD 100% for AT LEAST 6 months before we choose anything outside of it on his advice. Hopefully that will also give the doc time to learn more. If I don't stick to this diet 100% for a length of time, I will never know if it can actually work for my daughter. Guest guest
Metagenics makes some interesting products, but yes, they are not SCD legal. I have been curious to know if anyone has tried them- but not on this board!! They also fall into the " alternative " category even though Metagenics does have MD's on their board. Guest guest
When I met my new GI, I told her about SCD and she was very interested. She wrote down everything I said, so I assume she planned on looking into it at least a little. She was also happy to hear that I was taking enzymes, which is kind of unusual with most docs. If she ends up being an SCD supporter, I'll share her name. > > PJ >
