I am glad you wrote about the Sorenson. I am actually in the process of

applying right now. I am very nervous about it all because I am not

very techie minded and my signing is good but I don't know how well I

will do throwing in techie lingo with ASL. I do want to get this though

because is really missing her friends in VA. I am glad you were

able to connect. Maybe we will be use it at some point with our friends

here at Listen-Up.

You guys might already know this...but for families that have a deaf

family member and you are using sign language to communicate within the

deaf/hh community...you can obtain a free vp-100 videophone.

It is a videophone designed specifically for the deaf/hh community that

works with a high speed internet connection and your television to

enable you to sign back and forth with your caller/friends/family etc.

It is supposed to be the best technology on the market (so I hear).

I just applied and was approved even though Ozzie is only 6 months old

b/c I have NEW friends in the deaf/hh community. I think it will also

help with practicing my sign language.

HI Tammy,

We're each other's opposites! I am more " techie minded " but nervous about

my signing abilities. I've been learning over the past 3 months. I'm using

signed English, so that makes me even more nervous about branching out to

ASL users that I don't know well.

How funny is that? I use pigeon sign because asl is not natural for me

and I am an English minded person. However, I do great with kids, just

have to ask the adults to slow down a bit and sometimes still have to

revert to finger spelling. Although, most folks don’t mind. I am

better about asking now than I was before. That really helps. I was SO

intimidated. When we lived in Richmond, VA we attended silent lunches

and dinners on a weekly basis. In the beginning it was very nerve

wracking for me. But, I stuck with it because I had a two year old who

couldn’t communicate. Now she does. She can sign and voice. I work

really hard at not asking her to translate because sometimes I want to.

But I will ask her sometimes what is the sign for…whatever the word may

be. Your Ozzie is still young but you have lots of time to get the

basic vocab under your belt. I learned many things as we came across

them as she was growing her language with me. Now she is better than I

but I try to keep up. Although, she uses her voice so much more now

that she has a CI, we still insist on sign because she IS deaf no matter

what. I will not lose my ability to communicate with her because her

device might fail. Most of the time now, she does not want me to

interpret for her. I do clarify things when she wants. Otherwise, she

relies on her hearing and her voice.

Maybe you can find a place where you are that does something like the

silent lunches or dinners. It is very relaxing and the people that come

are there to use their sign to help others learn or practice. It was

fun and now we have many friends in the deaf community there. I am

still trying to locate something similar here in Louisville, KY now that

we have moved. I haven’t had much luck yet. Not finished looking

though.

Tammy,

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement!! They are greatly

appreciated. I am very intimidated about signing especially in public. I

totally agree with continuing to sign and build your signing vocabulary

.....our kids are deaf without their devices...I want Ozzie to have every

option available for him to succeed in life...for me that will always be

total communication skills.

Ozzie's speech teacher reminds me that the most important person I am

using sign language with is Ozzie...and to him, I'm already the expert.

That was sweet and helpful. AND I found a group about 30 minutes from me

that does one night a week of silent dinners! But I've been too

intimidated to go. I keep adding to my vocabulary and thinking " I'll go

next week/month " but I haven't gotten up the nerve to go. I think the

group is all ASL students that have graduated...I'm not sure if it is

hosted by anyone deaf/hh.

So maybe I'll make a promise to myself to start attending in April!

Hi Debbie,

I've been away from the board today, so I'm catching up on the postings.

Thanks for relating your experiences. All the positive support is building

my courage base!! The silent dinners in my areas are on Tuesdays at

6:30pm. My husband works until 10:00 pm on those nights. I'm going to

inquire if its okay if I bring my little man along with me. There isn't

supposed to be any voicing during the dinners, but I sign/speak to Ozzie

simultaneously. If I can bring Ozzie, I'm going to my first dinner the

first Tuesday in April!!

Also, I've made several contacts over the past several days. I've found an

employee at a resource center in the adjoining county that is Hard of

Hearing and uses signed English . He's willing to have lunch with me once

a week as well as videophone conversations one time a week in the evening.

I've meet a school interpreter that is going to take me to a church in the

adjoining county that has a " deaf service " ...where the entire congregation

is deaf. So hopefully I can attend at least once a month and make some

friends/contacts there as well.

Speaking of the videophone, I read one of your other posts. I'm

disappointed to hear the installer has such control over your obtaining

the videophone. I haven't heard from my installer yet. I hope we don't

encounter the same issue.

I did have to answer about 5 very inquiring emails from sorenson. However,

I made it very clear that we were employing total communication, not just

ASL. And Ozzie is only 6 months old. Also, I discussed my novice status

with ASL. We were still approved. Our local sorenson dealer said she would

be sending " her installer. " I guess will have to see what happens. I'll

keep you posted.
