Guest guest
bile salt binders Hi Jodi, So glad you're feeling better. I'd be careful of the bile salt binders. My son tried those at one time and they made him sicker. Also they're not legal on SCD. Here's an example of one: QUESTRAN powder contains the following inactive ingredients:acacia, citric acid, D & C Yellow No. 10, FD & C Yellow No.6, flavor (natural and artificial Orange), polysorbate 80, propylene glycol alginate and sucrose. QUESTRAN LIGHT contains the following inactive ingredients: aspartame, citric acid, colloidal silicon dioxide, D & C Yellow No. 10, FD & C Red No.40, flavor (natural and artificial Orange), maltodextrin, propylene glycol alginate and xanthan gum. Prayers for a speedy and great recovery. Take care, Pat Dell Mini Netbooks: Great deals starting at $299 after instant savings!
Guest guest
This is a bit graphic but I am having bowel sounds and it seems like I pass gas. When I go to the toilet to pee I wipe and I have stool on the toilet paper. Also has anyone taken bile salt binders after surgery? They want to put me on this. The upside it can help any GallBladder problems. I woke up this morning with no small bowel pain and no upper GI pain which was nice. I do still have pain from residual surgery like a bus hit me- but that is getting loads better. Thanks! Jodi
Guest guest
Jodi, <g> Great on the bowel sounds. I remember the Wednesday of my surgery, my oncologist was there and my system decided to go f-a-a-a-art very LOUDLY and with, shall we say, significant odor. I muttered the usual apology, and the oncologist laughed, and said, " Oh, no... no apologies! We LIKE hearing that after surgery! " >> Also has anyone taken bile salt binders after surgery? They want to put me on this. The upside it can help any GallBladder problems. << No... then again, I didn't have a gall bladder at that point. I would be very, very careful of any non-compounded medicines, because they are likely to be chock-full of illegals. Ask them what ALL the ingredients are, or, if you're not up to that, post the med they are proposing here, and one of us can look it up. Then you can decide how you wish to handle it. I can tell you that I ran into significant difficulties, not with specific meds -- not even Motrin / Ibuprofen -- but with all the fillers they put in with them. Prescription strength Motrin, for instance, uses LACTOSE as a filler! (And then I was wondering why my gut kept cramping, long past the point the pain should have eased up...) >> I woke up this morning with no small bowel pain and no upper GI pain which was nice. I do still have pain from residual surgery like a bus hit me- but that is getting loads better. << That's wonderful to hear! that it's getting better, I mean, not that you feel like a bus ran over you! Guest guest
Very useful info. I will ask my integrative doc if any of this can be compounded. My GI said it will be very helpful for me to take after the resection. I have a feeling he is right. I will keep you posted. Thanks! The Light form has aspartame, dyes, flavorings and everything illegal you can think of. There are other choices--colestid, prevachol. The cholestid tablet probably has fewer illegals however it cannot be cut and I found early on I didn't need the prescribed dose of Questran. Guest guest
Jodi, after my surgery they wanted to hear bowel sounds plus they wanted me to pass gas. It took me 4 days to have a bowel movement, it was very soft and black at first and formed after about a week or so. I didn't take anything for it. Glad your doing so well. Guest guest
Hi Marilyn, About the bus.. Yesterday was a very challenging day. It started out very well but then I had a problem with my Epidural Catheter (I would highly recommend it to anyone getting this type of surgery- it is wonderful for pain management. They give pain meds along with a numbing agent and it really worked wonders) until I had what seems to be an air bubble due to a kink in the hose. It was not taken care of immediately and I got an excruciating headache. The nurse taking care of me yesterday was a bit disorganized so it took pain management (they are in charge of epidural catheters) 3 hours to see me. When they originally saw me instead of just flushing the catheter and having me go off-line with it to see if the headache improved the doc decided to let it keep going. This headache escalated into bad neck pain, excruciating back pain and then numbness in my hands (this could of all been avoided!!) when they finally came back to see me I could not feel my hands. They took me off-line but they did not supplement pain meds during that time so I had to work strictly on the pump which didn't work since it was delivered through my back. So for about 4 hours in total I got no pain meds. OMG. I would not recommend this after major bowel surgery. So after this my pain doctor had to order where we go from there as I was not getting it through the catheter but IV. They were planning on taking me off the catheter tomorrow anyway but I was suppoed to transition to IV pain meds and then oral meds to prepare me to go home. I got no transition. The pain got so bad I had a complete set-back. So as my intestines are awakening I had to go through this. As it is I am having bad anal leakage (which is normal and that is why binding the bile salts is supposed to really help since I need to like where pads now so I don't have accidents) Anyway, all of this was complete set back.. I only started feeling ok a couple of hours ago as I am learning to use to new pain med so I will have enough in my system but not cause too much nausea. It is ok in the sense that I wish I could of stayed on the epidural but now I need to learn how to manage all of this while being on oral pain meds at home. Which is a major shift. It was very traumatic for me to have such excruciating pain set in. It was really bad care by the nurse and hospital. They also did not get my steroid dosage adjusted yesterday and they gave me all of my meds late including toradol which I am also getting for pain. I hope today is better and that I will in fact be able to eat some pureed food. I think eating will help me feel better and will also hel the leakage. Soon I will be able to take S Boulardii which is like magic for my gutt (I hope it still is post surgery) and eating yogurt. My pain management doc has no problem getting my pills compounded for me (how awesome is that?) and my integrative doc has no problem getting the bile salt binders compounded. I hope it is possible. My GI wants to put me on Questran- It will supposedly help the leakage so I can leave the house. It's a bit of a bummer. Phylis posted what is contained in Questran; http://www.rxlist.com/questran-drug.htm I should have pathology reports I hope next week. The Surgeon said the mass was very small perhaps tissue build up from the scar tissue. He did say he was happy we did something about this now as he does not know if this would of been the case in 1-2 years time. I got the sense from him we caught it in time. But, we can only know there is no dysplasia from biopsy results. All my docs seem pretty confident though. So, I hope my confidence is ok. I was totally able to walk outside the room yesterday and do a couple of circles around the floor. But after the pain issue that didn't happen again. I am hoping to do it today a couple of times and maybe they can lower the Heprin dosage because I am moving. I have had to contend with severe fluid retention due to IV's. they overloaded me because my blood pressure was very low post surgery- so I have really swelled and my peeing isn't great since taking the catheter out. It's all a work in progress. It's weird seeing such a huge knee when I look down. Jodi
Guest guest
Thank you Phyllis for this info. I am going to look into getting it compounded to be SCD compliant. I am having such horrible leakage that I feel I will need help for a couple of months. My GI said it would be a problem for me especially with the amount of proctitis I have (which may be from the ileum issues to begin with) I am so over the moon as 5 years ago my small bowel was an utter disaster. Now in surgery the doc said he was IMPRESSED with how healthy my small bowel looked comparing some the imaging he saw from 5 years ago. The nice things is that this did not become strictured the way the colon did. Interesting how that happened. I wish I understood the science behind it better. I am so thankful for what this diet has provided me. It has saved my life. Nothing short of that. Elaine's work and all these countless volunteers have taught me to get my health back. It's pretty miraculous living in the land of hope and not being depressed and despair ridden. Jodi

Guest guest
Hi Jodi, I have had a bowel resection and am reading your posts reoutinely. Mine was an emergency operation - I envy the itme you have had to prep for this - I would have been healed years ago had I known what I know now . . . I lost most of my lower small intestine, my ileocecal valve, my ascending colon, and half of my transverse colon. A lot of my D is due to transit time, and loss of that ileocecal valve, but I so have formed stools at certian times of the day - I am hoping this will improve - BUT ANYWAY . . . My advice - careful of judging pain while in the hospital - your experience will vary greatly once you begin to move, and get to go home. Just take it easy - and slow :)You seem to be a rock star here in this department, but I just wanted to mention it I was given questran - only after I left the hospital - it was very hard for me - it binded me completely, and (I think) contributed to the adhesions I experienced while my gut healed, which contributed to the pain, etc. (it was only thru Bikram yoga + accupuncture that I was able to undo those adhesions) Now I take an SCD compliant natural bile salt by Natural Process through my ND - called Cholacol - I think Standard Process is only available through MDs and and naturopaths. Cholacol helps me immensely, and I am able to tolerate fat, which helps keep my tummy full, and my energy up, and my stools formed, and not fatty D. e Gedroic - highly recommend her! http://www.gedroicfamilypractice.com/ in town, NJ I was also given Lomotil - a narcotic - meant to slow down the transit time. AWFUL. I don't reco any of these drugs once you are out of the hospital. We are packing to go on vacay, and I may not get back to the list - until we arrive at the beach. Feel free to email me personally if I can be of amy more help to you. Take VERY good care -and HEAL WELL! Guest guest
Thanks for calling me a rock star. I sure don't feel like one. I am however doing my very best and I cannot believe I went through the surgery. I am pretty proud of myself. I was scared Luckily being on this diet my small bowel looked really good. So they removed half of my transverse all the way including the cecum and ileum. They did say my ileum and cecum were so strictured I wasn't absorbing anyway. Since I am only 5 feet tall (my surgeon said I am tiny) that in my size they only removed 1.5- 2 feet in total. He needs to look up the exact dimensions. I really wanted him to take a picture for me but he said that he has seen so many colons that it is a good thing he was not interested LOL. I think this diet helped my small bowel like nothing else. My integrative doc was worried that my small bowel would be stricutured too but thankfully it wasn't and I have more than enough bowel to have normalized stool although my doc said it will take time and I may need help from Questran. I did learn today I can get it to be SCD compliant via a compounding pharmacy. The pain meds however cannot be compounded. How long did it take for your pain to get better at home. These two setbacks I had yesterday and today was pretty traumatic for me. The epidural catheter was like a dream between the fentanyl and numbing agent delivered in my spine I experienced no pain. Now, I am having pain spells. My transitions into feeling this have been quite violent so my brother and I decided that this is a learning curve too. hopefully my pain patch will be working to it's full capacity by tomorrow. I walked today and it released so much gasses that boy did I feel better. My GI and surgeon want me to walk walk walk. It will also help the expansion from the IV's. Thanks for all of your help, it is so appreciated I kind of feel alone. I mean I have so much loving support but this is brand new territory for me. It was nice waking up for a few days there with no bowel spasms. I was able to eat today and it went over really well. The GI said the minute I can eat some solids my blood counts and albumin should get better and my stool should bind more. He was right on the money. I will fwd you this email personally later too. Enjoy your vacation!! Jodi > > Hi Jodi, > I have had a bowel resection and am reading your posts reoutinely.
