Should the DOC band fit nice & tight?

Hi parents,

We got our DOC band Sat morning from CT's temp office in Pasadena.

My super active son who is a late-starter for the helmet was upset

while it was being put on, but after a little bit, was fine with it.

He was able to wear it all the way home (which was roughly 30mins

drive) and all day as well for the 1st day!

My question is how snug should the helmet fit into the head? With my

son, it seems like it's a bit loose (I didn't overstretch the

velcro - just closed them normally). I'd have to lift it up a bit on

his head so it doens't cover his eyes, and also the opening for the

left ear seems to stick to close to the edge of his ear. Basically,

I can move the helmet even with the slightest push of the nail of my

pinky finger! Does this sound right? Also my son having right tort,

his plagio is on the left side of his ear so the ear appears pushed

forward a bit. So this is probably why the opening on the left ear

is too close to his ear, and maybe while being corrected, the ear

would shift backwards?

Hope to get some opinions from the experienced parents here. Thanks

in advance.

The band will fit loosely after an adjustment. As you near the next

adjustment appt. it will get snug but not to the point where it is

causing red marks that don't fade. Also, yes the band will be closer

to one ear and further from the other ear. As long as red spots are

fading within the time frame they gave you then you are fine.

Thanks for the info. Actually the person who fit our helmet is

Jeannie Hertz. Her name sounded familiar when she introduced herself

to me, and after reading more on CT, I think this is the same CT

CEO. Assuming so, that would be nice that she's so hands-on, and

that she knows this really well so I guess i need not worry.

Btw, we were casted in San diego, and were called to come to their

temp Pasadena office for the fitting and future adjustments. Saves a

lot on gas + time :). I just worry that by that, we might be seeing

a different person during each adjustment and not all of them would

have the same skills. hopefully that's not the case.

Donna,

It should be a bit loose. Make sure it has room to slide a bit in the front. Drew had right tort as well and we saw the same thing with his ear. He is in a Starband, but it is similar to the DOC band. We are with Children's Healthcare of Atlanta and they have excellent orthotists, but you have to make sure they wait a full 20 minutes after the helmet fitting to see if there are any places to reshape. You might have to do this with yours. Good luck!
