Orthotist says helmet comes off in February when she's 15 months old -- problem?

I went to the orthotist for a helmet fitting Tuesday. Savannah has

done fantastic since we put her helmet back on again (she was in for

5 months, out for one, regressed, and has been back in for 4 weeks).

Her numbers are amazing! Over 50% improvement in everything and over

60% improvement in the right forehead/right ear/right eye issues.

Anyway, they said at 15 months her head will not really be conducive

to further correction and we should stop the helmet at that point.

From the literature I've seen, some people keep them on for several

months after.

I'm not trying to get a " perfect child " but I am wanting to get as

much as we can get out of this helmet. The money and time and stress

commitment has been incredible, and I don't want to regret stopping

at 15 months if there was more improvements that could be made.

Do you all agree with their 15 month rule? I've been deliriously

happy with everything they've done to this point. I do agree that

her soft spot has completely closed, but since her visit 4 weeks ago,

her head grew 2 more cm. So, is she truly not growing anymore?

Anybody know?

Hi Crissy,

I would keep it on if I were in your shoes. There are several babies

on this board that are just getting banded at 16 months and seeing

improvement. I would keep it on and see how things go. If during

the 16th month, there isn't significant progress, then maybe you can

take another look and see if you want to continue.

Since she has regressed before, I think it may be a better idea to

keep it on for a little longer.

In the end, you're the one that has to make the decision. Go with

your heart on this and don't let them convince you to do something

you're not comfortable with yet.

Good Luck!

Sam (mom of Nikki to be banded 1/25/08)

What band does she have? Some people start banding after 15 months

so I find it interesting that is when they want her to stop...could

it be because she recieved all the correction she could with that

band (ie. band no longer fits)? If the band still fits, then I

would ask them if she can continue to wear it which would obviously

mean you would need to still have appts. for adjustments. Good luck.
