Guest guest
, This all sounds very normal for a 4 day old infant. :c) It sounds like you are doing a wonderful job mom! You are right not to introduce a paci this early. It is better for him to use you as a pacifier than to use a paci as an artificial mom. I promise, after a few weeks, things will calm down. Just be glad your milk came in. My milk did not come in for FIVE days with my last one and I thought I was going to go insane. ;c) Just keep following your baby's cues and enjoy this time as much as you can. Don't worry about going places, your house, visitors (keep your robe on to discourage people from staying a long time), etc. and enjoy your tiny one. This time does not last long and it will be over before you know it. You should not have sores or scabs if he is latched on correctly. But, if it is healing, he may have resolved it. Are you attending LLL meetings? This would be great support. Just relax, put your feet up and pamper yourself as much as possible. Guest guest
First of all CONGRATULATIONS! >swallowing. Sometimes his upper lip seems tight though, is it supposed to >look flipped out like his bottom lip? Cam's top lip is always tight. His bottom lip looks right. We've done this for 3 months now (man I can't believe I can say that!!!) and that's the way he's always latched. >we're okay but my right nipple has little scabs and a little blister on the >tip, does that mean he's not latching correctly or is just normal since my >nipples are toughening up? Sounds normal. That's what mine looked like at first. >The big problem we are having right now is that he wants to nurse >*constantly* and I mean constantly. Cameron did this and I was SO tempted to just quit. Perseverance paid off as he quit at around 2 weeks. He did it again at 3 weeks and then not again since. Can you nurse laying down? That way you can get some sleep while he eats. We managed to hold off on the paci for 2 1/2 weeks. He had some nipple confusion the first day, but after that he's done fine. I'd say get an Avent paci to aid in the lack of nipple confusion. I know it's rough with a constant eater. I really thought I was going to die!! I'm proud to say that feeding Cameron when he wanted to early on has led to a great nursing relationship. Guest guest
Congrats! as for the top lip, My daughter's top lip is the same way. it's never given me any problems. I think thier top lips don't flair out as much as the bottom's do. As for the constant nursing. You said your milk came in yesterday? Your baby could be doing this to fully get your milk in and to build your supply. He should space his feedings out some here soon. Also, and I know i'm going to get slack for this. But he might just be using you as a pacifier at times. When my baby was born she nurse constantly. The nurse at the hospital swaddled her up in 2 blankets and gave her a pacifier and she slept for 4 hours! It's a matter of personal preference. but i don't think that a pacifier is as evil as some may think. My daughter NEVER got nipple confusion from it either. If nothing else. it allows you to have a few minutes to yourself. and every mother needs that. I hope breastfeeding continues to go well for you! and congrats again! kat __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Most l/c say to avoid the pacifier for the first month--especially allowing for those early growth spurts to be passed. Swaddling the baby can be very effective--depending on the child. I might suggest to swaddle in the evening to generate a cozy, quiet environment for sleeping. Guest guest
Congratulations, and Lukas! > swallowing. Sometimes his upper lip seems tight though, is it supposed to > look flipped out like his bottom lip? My nipples aren't sore so I think Sounds like his lips are fine. As for the scabs and blister on your nipple, just make sure that they don't get worse and you don't become sore. You might try varying positions that you nurse with on that side and using lansinoh to promote healing. If you become sore, contact LLL or the l/c immediately. As for the nursing pattern, try to set up a nursing corner where you can doze while Lukas sleeps. Take him to bed with you. Your milk has been in for such as short time that I would wait a few days--until he is a week old--before you get concerned about him nursing all day and night. If he is gassy, in addition to burping, try nursing him on the same side for 2-3 hour periods. This gets him more hindmilk--the weight gain variety--and if it doesn't help him, it won't be hurting either of you either. In the meantime, the other breast will be getting really full. If it is too full for Lukas to latch-on to, express enough milk to soften the breast and make the nipple easier to grasp. > starts drinking very slowly. He will only eat 15 minutes at the most at one > breast, then he lets go and I usually burp him and switch him to the other > breast. This is normal--fast swallows, then slow ones. My babies never took both breasts at this age. They would take one, burp, go to sleep for a while. I'd run for a shower or take a nap myself. > i'm not sure if the constant feeding and fussiness is just because he's so > young, or if we are doing something wrong. I'm sorry for running on and yes, it is because he is so young. You both went through a difficult labor--Lukas was on the receiving end of those contractions--so it will take a while to adjust. Enjoy if you have dh or another helper at home with you. If you don't have helpers, ask dh to fill water bottles for you before he leaves, and prepare some fingerfoods that you can have beside you or grab quickly from the frig. Guest guest
yep, I got one when I bought the disposable bottle kit when I was preg. DD hated it when she was born but loved the NUK. The avents don't really have a shape is why I think she didn't like it. http://www.kaarpaaj.com Re: My angel is finally here! Questions already... Guest guest
CONGRATULATIONS & Welcome Lukas! Sorry it's a late reply, but I'm just getting over a nasty stomach flu. You've probably already received a ton of advise but here goes any ways... You said that you didn't want to give a pacifier, what about showing him to suck on his fingers? I did this with Amy and at 2 weeks she was doing it all the time on her own. I know that a lot of people are not for this because you can't take their fingers away like a pacifier, but for me I don't really see it as a problem. If he's gulping he's probably getting a lot of air also and that could make him fussy, try leaning as far back in your bed or wherever you are feeding so he's sort of face down on your breast, and burp lots. This helped us since my letdown is so strong. I also only ever nursed 1 breast at a time unless she wanted more. Guest guest
, Sorry to be so late in replying. I am having trouble with my email and am just getting this. I would give him a little bit more time adjusting to the world before starting to switch his nursing patterns around. Do you have a sling? That could really help you feel more mobile while being able to satisfy his needs. I will keep reading more mail and see if you get the help you need. Feel free to email me privately at mailto:naturebaby@... Wendi My angel is finally here! Questions already... Lukas Leyba arrived Monday, November 13th at 10:25 a.m. He was 7 lbs. 15.6 ozs, 21 " long. He has tons of dark hair and blue eyes. Breastfeeding is going well, I think. He latched on right away in the deliver room and his latch looks really good. I always check to make sure his lower lip is flipped out, I can se his tongue curled under my nipple, and his cheeks are always smooth and his ears wiggle so I can tell he's swallowing. Sometimes his upper lip seems tight though, is it supposed to look flipped out like his bottom lip? My nipples aren't sore so I think we're okay but my right nipple has little scabs and a little blister on the tip, does that mean he's not latching correctly or is just normal since my nipples are toughening up? I saw the LC before leaving the hospital, and she thought his latch looked fine. The big problem we are having right now is that he wants to nurse *constantly* and I mean constantly. He is usually crying if my nipple isn't in his mouth. It seems that he has a huge need to suck for comfort, he won't go to sleep unless he is nursing. He'll lie there for hours slowly sucking and nodding off and sucking some more and nodding off. Sometimes he'll just be sleeping and not sucking any more, so i'll take him off the breast and then he wakes right up crying because he has to have my nipple in his mouth. I don't want to give him a pacifier and risk nipple confusion this early, but I am so exhausted. He hardly ever sleeps. He is always nursing or crying. My milk came in last night and I was hoping it would satisfy him more and he would sleep but no such luck, as a matter of fact, I think he's even fussier. Do you think he could be getting too much foremilk? I noticed that when he first starts drinking, he gulps very loudly and seems to be swallowing quickly. Then it slows down, and he starts drinking very slowly. He will only eat 15 minutes at the most at one breast, then he lets go and I usually burp him and switch him to the other breast. Sometimes he'll only eat 5 minutes at one breast. Should I try using only 1 breast at a feeding so he gets more hindmilk and switch back and forth every few hours? Or should I pump off some milk before he starts eating? He seems very gassy and fussy all the time. He is so young still, i'm not sure if the constant feeding and fussiness is just because he's so young, or if we are doing something wrong. I'm sorry for running on and asking a million questions, but I sure could use some input. It's so easy to doubt myself right now, we're so new at this. Also, I had a very difficult labor and he doesn't sleep much, so we're exhausted and I really need to figure out how to get him to feed at a more normal pace. My husband has been an angel, or i'd be tearing my hair out right now. But he can't feed him and that is all Luke does all day. I would appreciate any ideas.
