Guest guest
Hi, I would say most of us moms feel guilty, especially at the beginning. But honestly I didn't know anything about this when my daughter was born, and when I asked about her head at 2 mo I was told " don't worry " . Bad advice, but I didn't know. the bottom line is that you are doing something now. Also 5 mo is a great time to start. You should see very good results. take care. -christine sydney 20 mo starband grad > > Hi, > I ampretty new to this my 5 month old was just dianosised with > Positional Plagiocephaly. Guest guest
I know how you feel. My son was diagnosed with Plagiocephaly when he was about 2 months old and I was told he would just grow out of it. I have been doing all of the repositioning that is practicable, tons of tummy time, no seats except the bumbo, etc., and his head shape has just been getting worse. So I feel terrible –like I must not have been doing enough, and I should have been more pro-active about getting better medical advice (3rd opinions) sooner. The doctors, the physiotherapists, and the chiropractor have all been telling me that he will grow out of it. And I have finally hit the point where I just don’t believe that anymore, and now feel guilty that I didn’t come to this conclusion faster. At the moment I am pretty much making it my job to understand this condition and get it treated in the best way possible. And I am just hoping that 5 months isn’t too late to start, although at the rate things are moving I am afraid he will be 6 months before he actually gets a helmet. Anyway, thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone in this group that has been so helpful. The community on this site is just fantastic – what a relief to know I am not alone. Guest guest
I know how you feel as well. We noticed a flat side on my daughter's head when she was about 2 months old. At every visit, her ped told us that it would round out once she started sitting and rolling. She always turned her head to the right when sleeping & we constantly tried to turn it to the left. We also did tummy time a lot and held her instead of carrying her in her car seat. Our dr kept telling us that it was fine & that she'd have hair soon to "cover it up". Finally at her 6 month appt, our ped told us to go to see a specialist. We should have decided this on our own months earlier, but to be honest, I didn't know that it was an issue...we were told it was just cosmetic & not a big deal...not to worry. So, I worried but did nothing except kept her off of her head as much as I could:( We saw a specialist & she was diagnosed with moderate to severe plagio. He said that it was nothing that we did or didn't do. He could tell that this "flat spot" happened in utero b/c of her position. Even with that being known, I still feel so guilty & mad. She got her starband helmet on 9/7/07 at 7.5 months and is doing really well with it so far! It is great to have this correspondence with families in the same boat! I hope we all find some way to not feel as guilty and upset as we are. - Plagiocephaly From: nancy@...Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2007 22:52:54 +1000Subject: RE: Feeling guilty I know how you feel. Guest guest
The fact that you're so worried about what you could have done, or not done, is testament to the fact that you're clearly a diligent and attentive mother. Really...it's hard to tell up to five months what way their head is....they're so fatty-ish at that age. Also, does he have torticollis...if so there was pretty much nothing you could achieve without employing physical therapy techniques and such....if he doesn't have tort...then you'll get a helmet and he'll make great progress starting at such a young age. If he does have tort...be sure to find an experienced PT. Really, the onus is on the pediatricians who should take this more seriously. Unless you have a medical degree or had experience with plagio...there is no way you could see this coming. Your Ped should have seen this and made you aware of it....9 out of 10 times on this site women are writing about how their ped either didn't bring it to their attention or didn't think there was anything to worry about and I honestly think that if there was a shift in " their " education or " approach " to this condition it would reduce the number of cases dramatically. Don't blame yourself, you're doing what you can with the information available to you, and by the sounds of you, I bet you'll make sure your son achieves a very effect recovery. > > > > Hi, > > I ampretty new to this my 5 month old was just dianosised with > > Positional Plagiocephaly. Guest guest
I feel the same way. Jack has been in his helmet for 6 months now and I keep second guessing the past. I talked with his peds and they all said he would grow out of it. If it were not for my sisters persistence and her finding out info on the web I would of kept listening to the Dr. He had Torticollis so all of the repostioning did nothing for him. I hope that my guilty feelings will eventually go away as for now I tell my little man that I love his silly head no matter what. mom to Jack starband 4/02/03 > > Hi, > I ampretty new to this my 5 month old was just dianosised with > Positional Plagiocephaly. Guest guest
You should not feel guilty. It is so ingrained in our minds to put the kids on their back to sleep to prevent SIDS. That is a good thing. I think lots of times, the damage is done so early on that it is hard to reverse with repositioning alone. We tried all sort of repositioning before the helmet. Repositioning does not always work well and fast enough. Expect to feel very conflicted about the whole thing. One ped in our practice recommended the helmet, another thought maybe and the old school doctor didn't think we should bother. Yet, my son is " moderate to severe " . The good news is after 3 weeks my son went down from 14 to 11. mother of Kurt, Hanger helmet >From: " christineashok " <christineashok@...> >Reply-Plagiocephaly >Plagiocephaly >Subject: Re: Feeling guilty >Date: Mon, 17 Sep 2007 06:10:57 -0000 > >Hi, >I would say most of us moms feel guilty, especially at the beginning. >But honestly I didn't know anything about this when my daughter was >born, and when I asked about her head at 2 mo I was told " don't >worry " .
