Hello, is has had her helmet now for one month and the last week on

the back of her head where it needs to be flatened more is now raw. The

doctor shaved some foam out of that spot but one thing im really

concerned about it the it has rubbed that spot so raw that not only is

it continually red but it has created tiny little bumps on her skin and

those bumps are burting open and oozing clear liquid. I know with her

sweat that this can't be good and could cause a serious infection. But

the helmet doctor didn't seem to be phased about it. I know how

important it is for her to wear her helmet for the 23 hours but I feel

like that spot really needs to heal. Do any of you have any suggestions

on what I should do besides taking her to her regular dr (who by the

way doesn'y know anything about anything, and always sends us home when

she is sick)?

thnak you, Alisha

Sounds like a skin break down. Call the ortho and explain it to them. If redness remains after an hour the band should be removed and adjusted so that this does not happen.

I'd take the band off until you can get in to see the ortho. Call and leave a message with them to see what they say.

Alisha,

From what you are describing I would say you are getting the wrong

information and I would remove the band until someone else looks at

it. My Neuro who prescribed the band checks s head every 6

weeks for skin breakdown. So the ortho is not the only advice you can

seek, although I would be questioning why he would not think this was

a big deal. Oozing is a very big deal!Once this happens the helmet

almost always needs to be off until it heals completely. Insist on

being seen immediately!

Alisha,

My son is going through the same thing right now. He has been in the DOC band since 8/18 and has continued to get a red spot at the back of his neck (where the band "braces" to the head) - we have continually contacted the band folks about this and brought it to their attention at our 3 fittings as well and they just finally modified the band to fit differently rather than just shaving out some of the lining this time. We have had to remove the band for 3-4 hours at a time for the spot to fade before putting the band back on. The sore is nasty now and he is out of his helmet until it heals and if it doesn't get better by Monday we go to our pediatrician for a prescription (Duo derm). We are also supposed to follow up with our CT rep tomorrow and send pictures of the sore area so she can "see" it. We were told (finally) that this needs to heal before we can rechallenge with the helmet - when we do put it back on we need to check it every hour then every 2 hours and wean him back in slowly to make sure the sore area is healing properly. They also told us that it is imperative to make sure this heals or we may have to start the whole process over again (not sure that we would!) if he is out of the helmet for too long. Needless to say, we are quite frustrated that this has been allowed to go on this long and progress to this point despite our attempts to get this resolved earlier.

Please do insist that they take a look at this and remove the helmet until it heals or this can cause more trouble and prolonged time out of the helmet. I wish you and is good luck and happy healing! Keep us updated.

Thank you so much for replying. Yesturday I left her helmet off for

about 4 hours and I first gave her a bath so the area would be nce

and cleans and then I put some antibacterial ointment on it and then

let her play and once the4 hours was up it was time for her to go to

bed so I put it back on for bedtime and this morning I took it off to

look at it and it looked alot better it was only barely oozing and

the skin wasn't as red it was only pink colored. So i think im going

to take it off during play and clean and treat it and then put it

back on during sleep, and if it doesn't get healed with a few days

then I will keep it off till the dr will do something about it. She

goes to the dr for her 6 week scan on the 17th and the guy that does

the scan is very nice and I know he will do something about it. The

dr that it didn't seem to be a big deal to is a satalite office

because the big office (where she will get the scan) is so far away

for us.

Maureen,

I am so sorry that you were ignored. So what did act like when

you showed her, was she surprised. I actually bet she was very

flustered, which may have come off as matter of fact. I honestly do

not think she would have let it get this far had she seen him

earlier. After this I would insist on seeing her and not . He

is good if there is no issue, but once an issue arises you need

. I feel really bad because I recommended them. But really

is good I swear. Hopefully this clears up quickly but do not be

afraid to pester her from this point on

Alisha,

Definitely leave the band off till this heals. Otherwise, like you

fear, it could get infected and it could get to the point where she

needs the band off longer. I am surprised that your band clinician

isn't concerned about this and isn't telling you to leave it off

till it heals. What kind of band does is have? It sounds like

you need a new regular doctor.

Please don't apologize! was concerned (just as you said she would be) and had me tell her about the spot from the beginning. I do wish that we had seen her earlier, but now we know to only make appointments with her until this is fully resolved. We do see her the next 2 Fridays, and even are going to get a PT session with her on the 21st so I am looking forward to that. I like Mike, but am quite disappointed that he didn't really address this properly and let it progress to this point. I just hope that the band will fit better now and it wasn't casted wrong! modified the fit - which we aren't quite sure why Mike couldn't have done this...but what can we do now except move forward and hope for the best. Thank goodness our little guy is so very tolerable and I've enjoyed the past couple of days getting to kiss his little head all day! Hopefully we are starting back in the band today, the sore is looking better this morning.
