NATURAL HORMONES UNDER FDA SCRUTINY

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BEWARE--FDA is coercing nutritional supplement companies, who supply natural

hormones to health professionals, to " cease and desist " or face inspections and

fines. For this reason, some of our current suppliers, Bio-Tech (Thyroid) and

OrthoMolecular (sublingual progesterone), are removing these products from their

inventory. While we get most of our hormone products from compound pharmacies,

we were getting most of our thyroid from Bio-Tech. However, when a patient

recently informed me that he bought his " Biothroid " over the Internet from

Bio-Tech, I suspected there could be a potential problem!

Interestingly, Bio-Tech's thyroid is the same pure dried pork derivative that is

also used in Armour Thyroid, BUT without the additives and binders. Moreover,

there is a question as to whether natural hormones, which are food-derived, are

" drugs " that should be " regulated " by FDA OR are they grandfathered under GRAS

(Generally Regarded As Safe). For example, natural thyroid has been used since

the 1800s. I'll be interested to see what happens with those products being

promoted in health food stores as " progesterone " (although they only contain

either Wild Yam, which must be converted to progesterone, OR <3% Progesterone

(Progest), whereas we use 6%, 10%, and 20%).
