We filed for SSI for Bethany nearly twenty years ago. We had been told by the doctor who diagnosed her atresia that she would never speak and was probably mentally retarded. We were turned down for SSI and treated as though we were trying to cheat the government, which was not the case. Fortunately Bethany's original diagnosis was wrong -- she is totally oral and very intelligent -- but we didn't know that at the time and went through a great deal of anguish. Our financial situation at that time was very difficult and we did receive some help from a charitable agency to purchase one of her bone conduction hearing aids. As I explained in a recent post, the audiologist recommended we purchase both and ear level BCHA and a pocket-type battery pack/microphone BCHA and we were not financially able to do that. This list is a vital support service. Twenty years ago we were on our own and plenty scared. I'm interested to hear what others have experienced with application for SSI. Guest guest
We applied for SSI for our son and he got denied the first time also. We were told by his Children's Special Services worker that they pretty much deny everyone the first time they apply, she told us to appeal. SSi's denial letter stated to us that although our son was disabled, " it did not afect the quality of his life " , We appealed, and just got the letter last week saying that he been approved medically for SSI. We think they deny everyone to make sure you're really serious. If you appeal, chances are they'll take a better look at your child's case. Good luck, hope this has helped some. > >
