Thanks for asking, Randie. (Hey, I like this font!)

Copying and pasting an email that I sent out to my

chapter regarding Cheryl earlier this evening...

As some of you may already know, Cheryl's

surgery was postponed

yesterday. She arrived at the hospital bright and early Friday

morning, only to find out that her surgeon was called into emergency

surgery at 2 a.m. That surgery ended up lasting 12 hours. Cheryl was

admitted to & White at 2 p.m. and taken to the OR for surgery

at 7 a.m. this morning (Saturday). Jackie and I awaited the results of

her operation in the ICU waiting room today with three of her sisters.

A call came in at a little after 1 p.m. that everything went very well

and Cheryl was in the recovery room. They ended up having to do the

quintuple (5) bypass. They only had to make a small incision to the

get vein out of her leg to use in place of the 5 arteries. Also on a

good note... the arteries were all on top of her heart, so no need to

do a lot of manuevering around it. She was to be moved to the Coronary

Intensive Care Unit around 2 p.m., where she will stay for 24 hours

before being moved to a room on 5 West. She will probably be in the

hospital for a week. She will be receiving daily visits from a home

health care nurse for a week, following her discharge.

Thanks, Janet, for the update. So glad she came through it OK. I'm surprised they only made a small incision to get the leg vein. My husband had 5 bypasses in 1998, and they cut him from ankle to crotch. Maybe they are more considerate when performing surgery on a female. I'd like to think that at least.

Happy New Year,

Deanna

Surprised me, too. I'm curious as to what

they consider to be a 'small incision'. I mean how the heck would they

just make one little incision and then pull the whole long vein out of

there?? It would seem that they have to 'go in' from the other end of

the vein to cut it.

I think too that they've come so far in their surgical techniques !!!!!! Hubby had quadruple by-pass in '91 and has a long scar on his leg as well as his chest. His brother had by-pass surgery a few years ago and they never stopped his heart beating !!! Can't imagine that !!!!! Also, he doesn't have the scars that my hubby has. AND when hubby had one of his carotids cleaned out in '91 there is a scar there ~ when he had the other one done a few years back you can't even see the scar !!!!!!! AMAZING !!!!!!! AND his last by-pass was done with a small incision in the side ~ dr. did one behind his heart ~ they didn't want to reopen the original incision cause of scar tissue !!! They are truly doing WONDERFUL things nowdays !!!!!!! Hugs, Randie
