Guest guest
I have some questions for the veteran experts. Is vanilla extract GF? What about immitation vanilla extract? Are most extract flavors GF or is this something I need to be careful of. I have not used since going GF but am now motivated to try out some recipes. Also some of the ones I want to try call for powdered vanilla extract. I have checked 4 differant stores and can not find it. Where would I find this? Is it ok to sub regular vanilla extract for it? Thanks for the help!!!

Guest guest
Hi everybody - Any PURE extract is gluten-free. So if vanilla extract is PURE, it is gluten-free. I have not yet used powdered vanilla extract. I substitute some liquid. It isn't enough to make any difference. Aside: I just finished making the " Cheese Bread Balls " from Carol Fenster's " Gluten-Free 101 " cookbook. They are really easy to make, and everyone who has had them likes them alot. One friend says he " loves " them!! Barbara in SoCal Barbara __________________________________________________

Guest guest
Plain vanilla extract is gf. The fake stuff mostly is (it's made from pine bark in the US, most of the time), but some is not i've seen wheat based in products from Isreal). Others, you have to call on -- many are fine and made from teh actual food, but some are grown using bacteria or fungus, which has to feed on something and that something is _sometimes_ a starch. And sometimes barley malt is used to " help " the flavor of an additive. For the little amount of vanilla used, buy the real thing (there are many chemicals involved in its flavor besides vanillin, which is all you get with fake vanilla). If you don't bake much, get a smaall container at your grocery store; if you bake a lot, get the large container at a wholesale club such as Sam's Club (but not the 1/2 gallon of fake stuff for $3.00) > > I have some questions for the veteran experts.
