Guest guest
Our older son, Tom, who was implanted 6-1/2 months ago, was invited to be interviewed by Miss America 1995, Whitestone for the Cochlear Conference that was held today at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. It was so much fun! Tom did an excellent job - people had so many questions for him. He's such a funny kid - someone asked what it sounded like when he was activated and he told them that it was like a chipmunk going through puberty - LOL. This is my first foray into Yahoo photos but let's see if I can share this photo album with you. Tom has the maroon-colored shirt, Sam's is plaid and oh - can you tell which person is ME and which is Miss America?! :-) http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/btmellert/album?.dir=/18f4re2 & .src=ph -- **************** Barbara Mellert Manager, Social Science Computing Kiewit Computing Services Dartmouth College 13A Silsby Hall, HB 6121 Hanover NH 03755 Telephone: 603/646-2877 URL: http://www.dartmouth.edu/~ssc
Guest guest
Was it pretty exciting for an adolescent boy to be interviewed by Miss America??? What an exciting event. I hope you are keeping a scrap book of Tom's doings - he's been quite busy lately. I hope he's loving it. Unfortunately the pictures wouldn't open. Guest guest
Oh gosh, - Tom was on cloud 9! They asked me if he wanted to do it and I'm thinking " my hormone loaded 13 year old and Miss America - well yeah! " . He's having such a tremendous year this year. At one point during the question and answer period, our audiologist asked Tom a question from across the room. She has a fairly quiet voice and I was sure I would need to repeat her question and he got it - I think everyone there (including my husband and me!) were amazed. I wonder what I did to the pictures **sigh**?! Don't tell anyone I working in computing, please! :-) Barbara pcknott@... wrote: > Was it pretty exciting for an adolescent boy to be interviewed by Miss America??? What an exciting event. Guest guest
Hi Barb, I right clicked on the link and opened the pictures in a new window with no problem at all. What a handsome family you have. Tom is adorable with all that long wavy hair. Is that your husband next to you and behind Sam? I have to say, you looked way more nervous than your boys. What a cool experience! It is so great to see our kids be successful. Thanks for sharing. > > Was it pretty exciting for an adolescent boy to be interviewed by Miss America??? What an exciting event. Guest guest
Thanks Tracey - I told Tom it was MUCH harder for me than him - heck, I was so nervous I didn't even get any knitting done! :-) Yes, that is Hugh, my husband. I think he and Sam are clones of each other... Barbara traceyandynathen wrote: > Hi Barb, > I right clicked on the link and opened the pictures in a new window > with no problem at all. Guest guest
What a great opprotunity for Tom. He looks like he was really enjoying himself. You must be so proud of him. I know you didn't stay for the afternoon session, but there was great information for me. I hadn't expected to get so much good stuff. Cindy's presentation on the technology was really cool too. She explained how the BAHA could work for a unilateral SNL (applies to Emmett). I'm so grateful DHMC hosted the event, and even more grateful to meet kids and adults who are deaf with such great success stories. Hope all is well on the surgery front for Sam. Guest guest
Hi Johanna - I *so* enjoyed meeting you - I wish it had been longer! Thanks for your nice comments about Tom and Sam. I do think Tom has done fabulously well with his implant - Cindy (our audiologist) has even said as much. It was so validating for me to have people with quiet voices who were far away ask Tom questions that he heard and was able to respond - that blew me away! We didn't stay for the rest of the conference since the early intervention stuff wasn't really relevant but we did attend a cochlear conference a year and a half ago and it was excellent. I so appreciate DHMC's commitment to education! Keep your fingers crossed re: Sam's surgery - that Anthem (our insurer) will approve his surgery. We still don't know and it's 8 days away! It *is* all I want for mother's day - surely they know that?! <grin> Barbara Johanna Lynch wrote: > Barbara Mellert wrote: <<Our older son, Tom, who was implanted 6-1/2 months ago, was invited to > be interviewed by Miss America 1995, Whitestone for the Cochlear > Conference that was held today at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. > It was so much fun! Guest guest
I found the last cochlear conference (it was in Dec. 2004) to be the same way. Our own Flanders spoke at that one - so much great information. And Donna Sorkin is *so* impressive - such a nice person. She used to be the executive director of AG Bell before she moved to Cochlear. Her son will graduate from Dartmouth this spring so she likes being in our area!
