I wanted to finally introduce myself and give others some

encouragement to others at the same time. I'm , 49 years old.

December of 2004 I was having some dizziness so I went to the Doctor.

He wasn't terribly concerned about the dizziness but went ahead and

ordered blood work. A few days later in early January 2005 I returned

and both my cholesterol and triglycerides were high. Also, at 6'3 " I

weighed in at 254 pounds. I've been overweight my entire life. I can

remember weighing that much at the age of 17. My Doctor, an

endriconologist, wanted me to start the South Beach Diet as he

indicated I had early signs of insulin resistance. He said I didn't

really need to start with Phase I. Well, I went out and bought the

books and read them. I was convinced I DID need to start with Phase I.

It was difficult for me. You see I was a big bread, chip, cereal

lover, etc. You can relate. Those two weeks I ate more eggs than I

ever before but at the end of phase one I had lost 13 pounds. Not bad

I thought, I guess I'm going to continue. Long story short and a year

later my cholesterol and triglycerides are normal, my blood pressure

is normal (my Dr. has even taken me off my BP med) AND I've dropped a

total of 69 pounds. I now weigh 185 pounds. I must say that for me

exercise is also a key component, I go to the gym 6 days a week and do

aerobic activity (treadmill, etc) approximately 45 minutes a day. I

weigh myself once a week at the same time each week. I stay away from

the processed (junk) food, I don't go to fast food places. Breakfast

consists of a simple bowl of low sugar high fiber cereal (usually

Kashi Go Lean). Lunch is usually a salad of some sort followed by some

sf jello. Two snacks during the day, yogurt, a piece of fruit or a

handful of nuts. Dinner is usually a low fat meat with a side of

vegetables. After dinner I'll have a sf popsicle or some ff sf

pudding. I've also been on this list the entire time and have taken

encouragement from various folks and their posts.

I have more energy than ever before and feel great. I have a whole new

set of clothes. Friends and people I work with constantly notice the

change.

I've never been able to take the weight off before but with South

Beach I've had success. If I can do it, so can you. Good luck on your

journey.

Wow, . What an inspiring and terrific story you have! It is so

wonderful to not only hear about the weight loss you experienced, but also the

improvement in your health as well. I hope that after this introduction, you'll

share your thoughts, ideas and what's worked for you more often. It's wonderful

to hear from those who are successful at what we're striving to do.

Take care and thanks again for sharing your story,

Donna

,

Welcome to the list and congratulations on your success on the SBD. I

too have been more successful with South Beach long term than any

other way of eating. I think maybe it's because (for me) SB doesn't

require much " will power " (after phase 1), other than avoiding some

non-SB-compliant foods I like. That's not too hard. I don't keep that

stuff around anymore.

Exercise definitely increases my general energy level. And for me,

that tiredness after a workout is a great and rewarding feeling.

Sometimes, the worst point is the moment after I've completed my

warmup exercises, right before I begin running. There are days when I

just don't feel like exercising and have to push myself. But more

often, I look forward to a good workout. It can be a stress reliever too.

One added comment --

I never said I LIKED exercising, but when you do exercise regularly, you

feel better. Yes, there are times I have to make myself do it. I wish it

wasn't that way, but it is.

Did you ever stand outside the Wal-Mart store and watch people? Ever

notice that the overweight people will circle the parking lot for ten

minutes waiting for a parking space to open that is near the door? And

did you ever notice that it's the overweight people that tend to have

their cars all pulled up in the fire lane in front of the store so that

they can load their car up with bag after bag of potato chips and snack

cakes? Is it any wonder why so many people are overweight?
