I haven't heard of the AF system. Anyway, used an FM system in his preschool. How to get them to use it, depends a lot on the preschool itself, and even more specifically the teacher. We were lucky in that 's preschool teacher(s) were very willing to work with us, and learn how to use the FM system. The FM system itself was leant to us from a local hearing resource center (you can check them out at www.bcfhrc.com, nice web page eh?? hehe). But you can buy these systems yourself. I don't know whether an FM system is necessary in the preschool situation, but it can help. It is really only useful during circle or story time (only amplifies a single persons voice). It does not help during free play, or when the kids are interacting with each other a lot. But we decided we would try it because the system was available, and (and us) could get used to using such a system. Guest guest
Autumn, I wish I could say it was my own effort that did it, but the school district did it on their own! It's not something I would have pushed for at this point. There are only 9 students and one teacher and three or four aides. I would have asked later. So I have no literature or studies I can direct people to that might help in their situation. Still, I think it helps him immensely because he is still learning to listen, doesn't have much language anyway, and is, after all, a three-year-old boy! The FM system really helps him focus on what is going on. We are in an excellent school system. Fate, or God, or whatever you believe in is truly amazing. Less than two years ago, we were living in SC, with no intention of moving or adopting a hearing impaired child. Then my husband gets offered a job he couldn't refuse (more pay, less travel!) so we moved. Then we find Connor on our adoption agency's website and fall in love. Is it a coincidence we happen to be living in a super school district that has a fantastic special ed teacher!? Who knows! There were other factors that played into the timing of his adoption that had they not been there, we would not have him. It's amazing, really. Oops! Didn't mean to wax philosophic!
