Caucasian, mostly a German/Polish heritage... I know way back there is some Russian and Gypsies..... Blue eyed blonde... large boned. Taller than average.

Born in Germany, came to US as an infant and raised in Minnesota.

Was never chemically dependant (drugs, booze, cigarettes, etc).. except for caffeine.... Well.... hooked on chocolate!!! hehehehe Never got into excessive dieting. Did have a problem with drinking during a bad emotional crises, lasted a few months....

My 'defect' is a genetic one.... defective TSH receptors... it has been seen in other blood relatives.

I was given RAI to destroy my gland to stop thyroid storm... no remaining gland function. Totally dependant on thyroid hormone replacement.

I may just track this on a spread sheet.. using 3 digit IDs and no names... Keep everyone's privacy but still take advantage of the chance to see if there is enough data coming in through our group to see if there is any kind of a pattern... so far the only studies/stats have been based on gender and age.... more women than men and more folks seeming to be diagnosed in middle age.... but with the age thing.. that might have more to do with when symptoms were pronounced enough to see of when a doc finally 'saw' it.

Hmmmm so I should do a questionnaire... hmmmmm I guess I have another project! hehehe

Race: No predilection for any particular race has been established. Sex: The incidence of hypothyroidism is much greater in women than in men. Myxedema coma is extremely rare, but its incidence is higher in elderly women, especially those older than 60 years. Age: Hypothyroidism is seen more commonly in women aged 40-60 years; however, it can be seen in persons of all ages.

I'm caucasion with an English and Irish background. I am the only one that I know of who is hypothyroid. I've had it since I was about 8 years old and I'm wondering if my thyroid had an interruption of blood supply during my tonsillectomy. I've read that as a possible cause and the timing fits. The rest of my family members, including my son are tall, lean and energetic with a true zest for life. My daughter does struggle with her weight and depression, but she has been tested and her labs without medication are virtually identical to mine with medication... Judy

One thing I've heard is that people who are Indian or of Indian decent have more problems with diabetes. I found this out from someone who's Blackfoot when I was working at the feed store. Also says that there's more lactose intolerance they have to deal with too. He said he thought it was because Indians never got into drinking milk since they were hunter/gatherers and the same with sugar because they never had access until the white man come along and "helped" them out. My gramma who was where I got the Sioux blood from died from diabetes, but ya know, I can't remember her ever drinking milk or eating cheese. I guess it was never an issue that I noticed.
