Hi Cassie,

If she has a ridge is it worth going to a neurosurgeon to get a 2nd

opinion if it is normal? Sometimes ridges can indicate a problem (and

of course sometimes they are normal for a particular child).

As for the band, it won't make the sutures/soft spot close, but a bad

fitting band can make the head shape worse. If this is a concern take

photos and get a 2nd opinion about this. I think the front soft spot

closes around 2 but I hear parents on this site talk about it closing

much earlier. I honestly don't know if it sometimes closes much

earlier or if the doctor is wrong about that. The head grows a lot up

until age 2 and I would think it has to stay open to accommodate that

growth.

I've never heard of the helmet making them close. Has

craniosyntosis been ruled out? I didn't think sutures were suppose

to close until close to 2 or even oldr. I would definitely ask

about cranio. Keep us posted.

PS: My son didn't have a ridge until after the band but now it is a

lot less obvious. You could only tell by feeling it not looks.

Actually, the sutures don't fully and completely close until their

early-mid 20s. Our cranial facial surgeon explained this to me and

also I happened to hear about it on an episode of Forensic Files on

CourtTV (they found a skull and based on the fact that sutures were

still open somewhat, they were able to determine the victim was

between the ages of 16 and 24. It turned out she was 17). I believe

they are just partially closed through 2 years but it still limits

the amount of correction you can get.

As far as the soft spot/fontanelle goes, I've always understood that

it closes gradually over the first year and should be pretty much

closed by 12 months or soon after (if not earlier). I know the

doctor would always run her hand over my son's head at his checkups,

but I don't believe she did at his 18m visit. Also, my son had a CT

at 4 months and his soft spot was only about the size of a quarter.

I don't think the helmet has anything to do with it closing (since

my son wasn't even in the helmet his first year).

My son also has a ridge from the middle top of his forehead to where

his flat spot used to be. But it is caused by the dent he was born

with on the left side of his head. Cranio was ruled out by the CT he

had over a year ago, and the cranio surgeon just examined him last

week and wasn't concerned. It appears that it is just something he

was born with and there's a chance it will round out on it's own

over time (but haven't we all heard THAT before). It doesn't look

like the band will help it, we'll just have to see how it goes.

Correction. I meant to say:

My son also has a ridge from the middle top of his forehead to where

his SOFT spot used to be.
