Guest guest
Hi There I was just wondering if everyone normally has an endoscopy before their surgery. I am to be banded July 5th and my doctor has made no mention of having one. Laureen Pre-op 5/7/01 Ballarat, Australia laureen@... Hi laureen, all of Dr 's patients have an endoscopy prior to having a band. He is looking for a hiatus hernia. If he finds one he needs to fix that at the time of having the band. Also the pathology results are recorded on his data base and patients are asked to repeat the endoscopy at 12months. Then the results are compared and the patient is able to be reassured that the band is causing no harm. At least this is the case with over a hundred patients that have had a repeat endoscopy at 12 months. Regards Joy
Guest guest
hi sue, I am thinking about cancelling my Rny and go for a banding since it was approved.. Guest guest
When I saw my surgeon, he explained that the endoscopy was to determine if there were any anomolies with-in the stomache wall, ie ulcers, weaknesses etc which could lead to problems down the track. I think he also said it gave him an opportunity to have a look at the site which the band will be placed. I guess he is just being thorough. I am sure that most of us " newies " would definately appreciate the care even though it might prove to be an uncomfortable proceedure. Guest guest
Laureen, as far as I am aware an endoscopy is standard practice prior to banding. I had an endoscopy prior to surgery and my surgeon gave the rationale that it allows him to check the stomach to ensure that a band would be able to be fitted as well as ensuring there were no ulcers etc which would be a complication. Also being a baseline examination of the stomach recording pre-op condition allowing any post-op problems to be identified as occurring post-op. And finally I think they do some pressure measurements etc. If concerned I guess you need to discuss it with your surgeon and ask him why it is not needed. As your surgeon he is obligated to disclose any necessary tests/ potential problems/ expected outcomes of the surgery with you before the procedure so that informed consent is obtained from you prior to the procedure.
