Guest guest
that is what I thought1 but they said that I should just do the liquid diet and if he dosent stop or is driving me nuts then call back. he won't sleep, so I can't do much and THAT is driving me nuts! sick baby My ds is now one month old, for the last couple of days he has been really gassy, spitting up more frequently and his stools have been green and watery. He screams almost constantly and when you touch his belly you can hear the pain in his screams. I called the dr this morning and the nurse told my to go on a completly liquid diet for 24 hrs because he probably has a stomach bug. Is that normal? I have other kids too and I can't function on liquids alone! I would pass out befor dinner! I know he is not allergic to dairy or anything because he has been ok untill now. Any other suggestions? rebeccaGive the Gift of Life Breastfeed!http://www.lactivist.com Give the Gift of Life Breastfeed!http://www.lactivist.com
Guest guest
Thanks! Yeah it does sound like the oversupply/foremilk issue. He nurses until he is satisfied which dosen't take but 10 min or so, but I don't feel empty at all, he basically just gets the preassure off. I usually alternate between feedings, but I will try the 3-4 hr thing for the day. I have one side that seems to make more than the other, should I let him use that side for a longer period? How will this affect my sup[ply? Will the other side just be ready to explode after the 3-4 hr period? Should I pump the other side? Wow, a lot of questions Thanks RE: sick baby , I wouldn't go on a liquid diet if my baby was ill. I wouldn't go on a liquid diet if I was ill, for that matter. What you are describing sounds like it could be oversupply syndrome. Do you have a lot of milk, do you leak? If so he could be getting filled up too quickly on foremilk and not getting enough hindmilk, which is richer and fattier. If this is the problem you can remedy it by just nursing from one breast over the course of 3-4 hours then switch to the other side. So if your baby wants to nurse within that 3-4 hours just offer one breast repeatedly and then in the next 3-4 hours offer the other breast. Other than that if it is a stomach bug, nursing is your best bet. Surviving on liquids doesn't sound fun so use your best judgement there. Guest guest
PS Could this also be why he would grunt and squirm while he is eating? He twists and squirms and shoves his face into my breast and grunts a lot. RE: sick baby , I wouldn't go on a liquid diet if my baby was ill. Guest guest
The liquid diet for you doesn't make sense to me. You need to keep up your strength to care for him. I would take him in to be seen with a sore tummy at that age if he is screaming when you touch it. Even a stomach virus can be dangerous at that age. I would want to be reassured. Guest guest
I am not sure how *you* having a liquid diet will help? It sounds like someone thinks there is a tube from your stomach to your breast. It does sound like he is getting a lot of foremilk though. Spitty, gassy, green poops. I have to go to a meeting right now. If no one else has emailed you on how to remedy that, I will finish when I get back. Guest guest
, Dairy allergy or another food sensitivity could indeed be the problem--it doesn't show up right away, usually not for about 3 weeks. If there are allergies in your family history, you could cut out those foods. If thinks aren't better in three days, try cutting out wheat, nuts, foods high in vitamin C, or dairy. Most things clear your system fast, but with dairy it can take 2-3 weeks. In the meantime, I disagree with the liquid diet--the total exclusion diet for bf moms is BRAT--banana, rice, applesauce and toast. I would try to massage your baby's tummy, burp him often, carry him in a sitting position (bent at the hips) against your chest in a sling--these tips will help him pass his own gas--and nurse as often as he's willing. Guest guest
, Alternating which breast to feed at by the 3-4 hour plan will cause on breast to feel extra full toward the end of the "off period," but within a few days your body will adjust to the change and you won't feel so full on the "not-in-use" side between uses. While your body is making the adjustment, don't pump either breast unless 1) your so full on the "off" side you just feel awful or 2) it is switching time and the "new" breast is so full the baby has a hard time latching on. In either case, you would pump enough to relieve the fullness/engorgement, but not more than that. What you pump off would be foremilk, and you should save it--maybe frozen in ice cube trays first--for cereal or snacks, but since it won't have hindmilk, too, I wouldn't use it for regular feedings if you are stashing for a work situation. Hope this explains things a bit, Amy Lynnmother to 1-25-98 and 2-10-00Want great toys? Guest guest
Actually its quite common for an allergy not to show for some time as it often needs to reach a threshold level. My dd didn't show any allergy signs till she was 5 weeks then all h*ll broke loose. 8.13.00 Who's DD is Allergic to: Crab, Shrimp, Oyster, Lamb, Beef, Chicken, Pork, Chocolate, Coffee, Tea, Barley, Egg White, Cows Milk, Peach, Cantaloupe, Strawberry, Cherry, Cashew Nut, Avocado, Cabbage, Peas, Cucumber, Tomato, Bell Pepper, Corn, Carrot, Banana, Alfalfa, Mites, Rabbits, Dog, Tobacco, Polyester, Baby Powder, Diaper Wipes, Tide. + environmental allergens. sick baby My ds is now one month old, for the last couple of days he has been really gassy, spitting up more frequently and his stools have been green and watery.
