Brachy Question Again

I know I have been harping on this brachy thing and asking questions

but today a mother with a 4 year came up to me and told me her DS had 2

helmets consecutively from the time he was 8 months to 2 years. This

kid had very visible brachy even from the front. She also told my

husband she has to have bike helmets specially made for her son.

She said that her son just didn't have growth spurts so they kept the

helmets on for a long time. Does that even make sense? How is that

possible? How could this kid wear only 2 helmets for almost a year and

a half? And how could he still have VERY visible brachy.

My DS is currently 8 months old and is just about to get his second

helmet. He had plagio and brachy. Plagio is less then 5mm off. And

the brachy is down to 93% 2 standard deviations from the norm down from

4 standard deviations.

After this experience today I am just wondering what I can expect after

this second helmet. I just wanted to ask again if anyone got the

Brachy within one standard deviation of the norm or even close to

normal. I guess I am hoping for 83% or below. I know said

her daughter was down to 86% and even that looked pretty good. So I

was just curious.

Hi ,

the explanations I have for this is that the 4 year old had very very

severe brachy and/or a very bad helmet provider. Presumably he outgrew

the first helment - so should have gotten some correction. It is also

possible that his mom didn't keep him in the band 23 hours a day -

compliance is really important, otherwise you can miss a lot of growth.

Hi . The Mother said they went to Cranial Tech. But I have

a feeling it could have been the compliance thing. She said that he

kept taking the second helmet off. So who knows. Your daugther

looked really good and DS isn't too far off so that makes me feel

better.

Not sure if you know this yet or not but does your daughter have

trouble finding bike helmets. CT said this would not be a problem

for DS but ya never know.

My son just had plagio so I don't really know about the brachy. My

first flinch is to think maybe those bands didn't fit right. I'm not

sure about keeping bands on for a really long time. I know the DOC

says their bands aren't effective after 16 weeks but I don't know if

that could be different if there is no growth. No growth spurts from

8 months-2 years seems very odd to me especially as I watch my

little one (14 months) grow. He wore a band from 7.5-9.5 months and

had some great growth during that time. Overall, I wouldn't worry

about your experience today as every kid is different and something

doesn't seem right about this experience with the 4 year old (i.e.

the no growth, helmets for 1.5 years, visible brachy still, etc.) I

still would have to think that maybe the band orthosist was not very

good and the helmet didn't fit right or maybe the 4 year old some

other issue that was going on. I don't know just me thinking out

loud.

Considering that we had an excellent experience with Cranial Tech.

(and a lot of people do) I am thinking maybe it was a compliance

issue not a bad clinician or very severe brachy. It didn't even

dawn on me that he had to have had growth since he went from one

helmet to another until I read 's post. Hopefully, your

little one keeps hitting his growth spurts and does well in his

second band.

-At first I did not think the second helmet was working but over the

last two weeks we have seen great results. It is all about the growth

spurts!
