Please, does anyone have experience with Dr. Reinisch in California

to perform secondary surgery?

I just spoke with him and he thinks he might be able to work on

Mike's ear.

Hi Birgitte. I'm not exactly sure what do you mean with " secondary

surgery " (Does it mean that Mike had an original surgery done?). In

any case, Dr. Reinisch operated our son Gonzalo a year from next

March 17th. The experience has been quite good for us. He was

interveined exactly one day after his third birthday. The ear looks

very natural in color and shape, and even though it is bigger than

normal, it has a very nice overall impression (it shall be same size

in a few years). On the second surgery he had done the tragus and the

resemblance of the ear canal (no actual canal done), and that

improved the look quite a bit.

As I promessed Bostwick, we'll be posting a complete text with

details of our experience with the Medpor / Reinisch experience,

along with pictures (one month, three months, final). If you have ANY

questions, before or after we post that message, we'll be very glad

to answer.

Kind regards

Lujambio I.

I have had a terrible time with Dr. Reinisch's office (staff) I get the run

around every time I try to set something up. I even had Brayden's doctors

office call and speak with them and fax all info they needed. I finally gave

up. We still have time and we are leaning toward Dr. Brent, but I was really

put off by the staff.

<< As far as I know, that is what Dr. Reinisch recommends for

unilaterals. >>

Hi ,

So are you saying Dr. Reinisch recommended no canalplasty just on Gonzalo?

Or is this his general rule for all reconstructions he does? This is a major

consideration when choosing a method of reconstruction.

I can't wait to see the picutures of Gonzalo. Thank you for sharing all your

information with us. It is very helpful for us who still have decisions to

make.

Hi, Lynne. Our Gonzalo was unilateral microtia/atresia. We had

been recommended by four Doctors here in Mexico not to do anything

with his ear canal. Dr. Reinisch just confirmed that opinion, hence

we did nothing else on that.

As far as I know, that is what Dr. Reinisch recommends for

unilaterals.

Autumn: I don't know what Dr. Reinisch recommends in general. He did

not recommend canalplasty for my Gonzalo. I promess to post those

pictures as soon as I borrow a higher resolution camera.

Just to add to what Autumn said, I also had a difficult time dealing

with Dr. Reinisch's office. Over a year ago, I e mailed them and began

by asking general microtia questions. I didn't tell them that my son

already had a polyethylene implant. I got a response back almost

immediately. My next e mail went on to ask about hearing restoration

after implant surgery. I wanted to know what they suggest to their

patients, if their patients go on to request canalplasties and if so,

who they use for that surgery. I was very curious and anxiously

awaiting answers since I had just found out that Dr. J would not do a

canalplasty on Evan. No answers ever came. I e mailed several more

times, nothing. I felt like they were avoiding answering my questions.

I also found it very strange. I even called once and was told someone

would get back to me. No one ever called back.

, if you don't mind me asking, what was the case with you and

Gonzolo? Did you ever approach the subject of canalplasty with Dr.

Reinisch? What was his response? Do you know what his patients are

doing about hearing restoration?

Thanks for your help,

Lynne

Thanks for the information . Yes, I know the usual road traveled

for unilateral cases is not to do a canalplasty but I was hoping he may

have mentioned something to you about what he does do when a patient

requests it or information about it. When you have a child with

bilateral microtia, you absolutely have to know what lies ahead in terms

of hearing before you can make the proper decision for reconstruction.

I'm sure that Dr. Reinisch deals with bilateral patients and I'm sure

some have asked about opening the ear canal. I'm dying to know what he

tells them! Evan isn't doing that well with the unilateral hearing that

he has of late. This may become a pressing issue for us soon. I would

really like to know where I stand with this situation. Looks like I may

have to begin another e mail campaign to Dr. Reinisch's office. *uggg*
