Guest guest
Hi group. I just joined a few days ago. My husband and I started noticing that our daughter's (Melody) head appeared to be a bit shifted forward on the right side about 2 months ago. We questioned this with her Dr. at her 2 months check-up and he said, " we can't all be symetrical " . Being the parents of 2 other special needs children we were not happy with this answer and started looking on the net and came across plagio. Melody saw another Doctor this past Tuesday. She did an x-ray of her head and determined that one of the joints in her skull was not fusing too early. She also checked he neck muscles and they seemed fine also. A relief. We still question her head shape though. I posted a couple of pictures of Melody in the photos, album titled Melody. I would appreciate some opinions on her head shape. The new Doctor we saw said she would be happy to refer her to a specialist for another opinion. We live in Alabama and were given 2 choices as to where we could go. A place in Atlanta or another in Birmingham. If anyone has had some experience with these 2 places, not sure of the names, please let me know. We live equal distance from both and already travel a good deal to Birmingham with our other 2 children. Thank you all so much! I am happy to have found this group! Guest guest
Hi and welcome! I definitely see some asymmetry in the pictures. In the second picture her ears look off as well. Does she have any facial asymmetry? Sometimes facial asymmetry can be easier to spot if you hold her up to a mirror and look at her reflection, thats how I noticed my dd's. I'm sorry, I don't have any experience with any of those places, I'm in the process of getting insurance to cover a helmet for my 5 month old. Other people on in the group might know about them though. From what I've learned here it's probably a good idea to call each place and find out how experienced they are at treating plagiocephaly. Ask how many babies they do a month, how experienced the tech is, ect. If you are unhappy with your daughters head shape then by all means pursue treatment. My daughter's head certainly isn't considered " severe " , but it's common for moderate plagiocephaly to be treated as well. Naomi & (5 months) > > Hi group. > > I just joined a few days ago. Guest guest
Welcome Voni! I am so glad you found this group - You will see that there are alot of supportive parents here who can help! I looked at melody's pics and saw what you are talking about - You can see the forehead bossing, the ear asym and the flat back right. My dd also had right plagio and wore 2 hanger bands. As far as where to go - the MOST important thing to consider is the experience of the Orthotist who will be treating your daughter. The best band in bad hands can actually cause more harm. Call both places and speak with the ortho about thier experience, how many cases they see a month? A year? How many years in practice? There are many different bands but the 3 main ones are DOC, Starband and Hanger. At DOC (Cranial Tech) ALL they do is bands where as other places provide other types of prostetics and orthotics. So the orthos there have a broader spectrum of train over many things and DOC is concentrated only with Bands. If you have more info maybe a parents here can help you more. Guest guest
Hi, From the pictures, I would definitely go to a specialist. Yes, everyone has some assymetry but like you I wouldn't be okay with that answer from a doctor. From the pictures you posted, if this was my baby I would band. The front of her head definitely shifts forward and she has plagio on the right side. I wonder the same thing, does she have facial assymetry? Unfortunately, unless you repositon (aggressively), it probably will NOT round out. If you choose to try repositioning I would only do it for a month or two max and take pictures to mark progress. We repositioned from 2- 7months and my son did not change (better or worse). He was banded at 7.5 months. If you aren't happy with the head shape and don't wish to repositon but want correction then I would definitely start the process now as insurance and casting and other things take time. The earlier the quicker that they can be done with the band. Good luck. Banding is really no big deal. Sorry, I don't know anything about those banding places...I'm in AZ. > > > > Hi group. > > > > I just joined a few days ago. Guest guest
I posted a couple face pictures of Melody in her folder. I don't think I see any asymmetry there. Take a look and tell me what you think. Guest guest
Hi, Melody actually looks pretty similar to how my twins were at 4 months! We have been aggressively repo-ing and have seen a lot of improvement in 1.5 months of repo. Check out the files on this group's website for ideas on repositioning. Boppy noggin nests are great! I have also been using a sleep positioner with a memory foam pillow and keeping them off their heads as much as possible....LOTS of tummy time. My guys both have tort, in opposite directions, so we are also getting PT for that, and its also getting better. I think repositioning for a month is worth a try. In the mean time you can look into getting a band if you thik you want to pursue that. I think repo-ing one baby would be a lot easier than it has been with two! Good luck! Guest guest
Hi Voni, Melody is a beautiful baby, seems really happy too!! I only saw 1 picture of Melody, and it may not be a good one to determine asymmetry, however, it does look like her right cheek is a little fuller, and there may be a little difference in her eyes. If you post another picture try to make it one where both ears are visible as well, to see if there is a difference of one ear beging forward or lower than the other. good luck with repo. Guest guest
I looked at Melody's face pictures...she is adorable! :>) Her eyes looked alligned to me. Her right cheek looks slightly larger than the left cheek. It could just be the picture? Let us know what you decide to do as far as repositioning or banding goes. Good luck. PS: If you decide to try repostioning first but are open to banding if needed then I would work on the insurance approval and the prescription from the doctor now as it can take time. Our son was 7.5 months when we banded so we banded then appealed our insurance. > > > > > > > > Hi group. > > > > > > > > I just joined a few days ago. Guest guest
Hi Voni, Melody is precious. Her pictures look very similar to my little 5 month old Isabelle. My pediatrician said she definitely needed a band. I tried repo for a month but it didn't do anything. We decided to put her in the DOC band, and she started wearing it on Friday. Cranial Tech said she would only have to wear it for about 6 weeks. So if you decide to do it now she probably wouldn't have to wear it very long. Good luck! Guest guest
My 3 year old just DEVOURED the " pumpkin pie " . I made 2 pie's of it and he ate 1 all by his self! HORRAY! Yesterday he ate turkey and green olives (Thanks Kara!). Sam, my son was completely addicted to wheat and sugar and it has been hard, but things are getting better and my strong support system is what makes it work. Check out the Recipes in our Group's Files (left menu) for Condiments. There's a terrific mayonnaise recipe that is great for a dipping sauce. Also see sauces in the recipes files.
