Guest guest
Dear Laurie and others, When I was in my 20's, I went into a 3-day coma after major knee surgery. The doctor said that I gave them a real scare. They never found a reason. Hindsight being 20/20, it was probably the mito. Last year I had surgery at a major teaching hospital in New York City. They do a very detailed pre-surgery interview about a week before the scheduled procedure. When I arrived the day of surgery, the asst. head of anesthesia dutifully read Dr. Cohen's article on anesthesia, but this doctor said that some of the info therein was " outdated. " He refused to give me general anesthesia (he knew all about mito), so I had a local with some sedation. I do prefer a general though. I notified the UMDF about this, and they said that they would do follow-up with the doctor. Does anyone know if the UMDF article on anesthesia has been modified? Guest guest
It has not been modified to my knowledge and when I had my surgery 1.5 years ago, it was considered the gold standard for us. They have meant that the named anesthetics were outdated, which is correct, but these are the ones we shouldn't have. They don't like to use them as the newer ones are those they most familiar at this time. I have had locals and spinals for several surgeries, but there was no way I wanted to be awake for the rotator cuff surgery. It was the most painful surgery I have ever had and I don't think I would have done well being awake for snipping and filing of bone. I am nosey and like to see what is going on, but not that time. laurie > From: BDS31@... > Reply-To: > Date: Tue, 3 Aug 2004 21:42:06 -0400 > To: > Subject: Re: Anesthesia > > Dear Laurie and others, > When I was in my 20's, I went into a 3-day coma after major knee > surgery. Guest guest
Have you received any answers yet to this question? I, too would like to have an updated article with the correct info. > Dear Laurie and others, > When I was in my 20's, I went into a 3-day coma after major knee > surgery. Guest guest
Dear Adrienne, No, I have never heard back from the UMDF about their follow-up on the anesthesia question. Unfortunately, I can't remember who from the UMDF (mito brain strikes again!) told me that they would pursue this with alacrity. Maybe I'll try emailing them again, as it is a very important question. I am supposed to have another muscle bx soon, and may be also facing major surgery, too. I will know more this week. Take care! Sincerely, PA
Guest guest
, I don't remember seeing your original question, but I wanted to make sure you read the anesthesia article that Dr. Cohen wrote. Guest guest
Dear , Thanks for your interest. I could not access it, but my anesthesiologist did. Because of the coma I once suffered, I really do try to be sure to alert my docs. In fact, one of my doctors last week said to try to have two procedures done if I was going to have a general. And this is not counting the upcoming 2nd biopsy. Sigh... By the way, thank you so much, your daughter, and Laurie for the beautiful Mitoldies booth at the UMDF conference. Take care.
