Perhaps Velcro! Just kidding. My son is non-verbal and that has always

been a concern for us. We joined Medic Alert and attached the medallion to

his shoe lace. We also took a flyer with a current picture of him and all

medical and contact information to the local police station where we live

and where he goes to school and asked them to post it, just in case!

That is a great idea! We are new here in Sterling Heights and since we are

on the boarder of 2 other cities I should take his picture down to all three

police stations so they know since he is always running off on me!!!!!!!!!

Also---- Does anyone else have problems with their child hitting and slapping

them and other adults/children? My son is so out of control!!! I am wondering

if other parents have this trouble. He is also in impossible to discipline.

NOTHING works!!! Any suggestions???? Please!!!

Smiles! :) :) :)

Yes, we have discipline problems such as that. I did get my son into see Dr. Gupta a neurologist in Southfield. She has been very helpful. Let me know if you want her number. She can get you in pretty quickly too. Kathy

Theresa,

One thing you mentioned here that caught my eye was the running in the street or running away from you. The only time my son does that in peticular is when he eats a banana or an apple (or something containing those things....i.e.m Apple Jacks cereal). These items have phenols in them and some of our kids cannot process the phenol chemical so in simplest terms (my own) it shorts his brain out and he just has to GO everywhere. I don't know that this is your son's issue but if he eats alot of bananas and/or apples you might want to eliminate them and see if it helps. Keep in mind that once my son eats that stuff, it effects his behavior for 4 very, very, very L....O.....N.....G days :0)

, I am so sorry that you are having such a hard time. Most of that sounds pretty similar. My son just turned 5 on May 8 and yes Dr. Gupta has prescribed Ritalin for ADHD symptoms. It seems to have helped and the diet has helped too, I have only taken away the casein so far. I'm sure it must be difficult having to do it all on your own. As far as your house being trashed I totally understand. Just last week I remember Elijah climbing on the cupboards and dumping Elbow macaroni everywhere and kitten chow. I gave up cleaning because it was of no use. things seem much better this week we started the Ritalin on Tuesday and the diet on Wednesday. Hang in there I know it's tough. Dr. Gupta's number is . i don't know if she takes medicaid, but you can call and find out. P.S. I have spent many times feeling guilty that maybe I'm a bad parent and need to discipline him more, but it's not true. Don't worry about what others think or so, no matter how hard. And if you need to cry, cry, cry. It's good for the soul. Kathy.

had them lately.. in the past coupple days. I will try skipping them for

For ANYONE looking for respite care: try contacting JARC (office is located on Northwestern Highway in Southfiel/Farmington Hills). Once again, this is a Jewish based organization which provides services regardless of faith. They will give you respite care and will help you connect with other support/service organizitions. They may be helpful for you.

Not one single thing has worked for us alone, either. However, the combination of changing my daughter's diet and implementing a behavioral plan (and sticking to it) as part of her ABA program has made a TREMENDOUS difference.

P.S. Michele, what school district do you live in and are you doing ABA privately?

My son has gone through a " phase " the last two falls where he slaps - but

not because he's angry, I think he's trying to play. He thinks its funny.

The only thing that has worked for us is time outs - sometimes in a chair,

sometimes we take away whatever he's playing with, sometimes I just sit him

in the hallway with nothing to look at but the wall (usually for about 5

minutes). Once he starts complaining, I know its working!

Lovaas and ABA (and DTT) are all essentially the same thing. There are Private Practitioners (i.e. Ms. Zeiter from toledo, Krista Kennedy (our specialist)), psychologists who specialize in using this behavioral intervention for children with autism spectrum disorders. Beaumont hospital's hope project (run by their behavioral specialist jamie mcgilivary) also trains parents to do the aba.

a quick and easy book to read up on the program is "right from the start", you can find it on the different roads to learning website (along with a few other titles re: this subject).
