Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to share some wonderful news with all of you. A couple

of weeks ago I was discharged from Hospice of the Valley services!

After nearly two years as a hospice patient, I have to say it feels

really good to be off. My doctors, parents and myself think I am

stable right now, and that at this point I no longer need hospice

services. We have set up a different long term plan that still gives

me a lot of the services that hospice provided. My insurance bought

my a fully-electric bed, drop arm bedside commode, overbed table and

shower chair, which are items hospice was providing for me. I now

have a visit nurse, in addition to all of my shift nurses, who does

pain management, and basically oversees my care to make sure I am ok.

She basically does the same thing my hospice nurse did.

Also, my insurance agreed to pay for unlimited advanced life support

ambulance rides when I need them, which means a nurse is in the

ambulance with me instead of an EMT or paramedic. I also have

unlimited ER trips and unlimited hospital admissions. So far, this

plan has worked really well for me.

The day mom signed the discharge papers we had a big party, ate a lot

of junk food and all of us girls scrapbooked together (my favorite

hobby). I am glad hospice was there when I needed them, and they

provided a much needed service. However, it feels really wonderful to

know that at this point I don't need them :) Just wanted to share my

wonderful news with everyone! I hope you are all doing ok.

Keep Smiling,

Nikki :)

you put a very big smile on my face when I read this. Wow, Nikki. What

wonderful news. I am so thrilled for you because you have been on a very long

and unpleasant road that now seems to be curving in your direction.

Congratulations!

I can imagine how much fun you all had at the party and it was well deserved.

Give your mom a hug for me. She must be feeling a great deal of joy too.

HI Nikki,

Wow this is awesome news!! I am so proud of you for working so hard to overcome

your illness and the road blocks that were in your way. You did a great job of

breaking down those obstacles.

It is so great to hear that you are stable at this point and I pray that you

stay stable and with more time you will also see more improvements in your

health.

Your new plan that you and your family set up sure is complete and overseees all

of your health needs. I am glad that your insurance company has agreed with your

plan ( as we know so many insurance companies try to take all of our money

without giving us anything in return) which sounds very complete.

So you had a party, eh? Good for you!! I hope you ate all kinds of junk food and

enjoyed every mouthwatering bite of it. You are right, it is nice to know that

Hospice is their when we need them, but the feeling of being released and free

must be exilerating!!

Keep up the good work. You are a real Hero!!

Hugs,

Ann-Marie

Nikki!!

Believe it or not, these past few days you have been on my mind a

lot. I've been wondering how you are, how the walking was going,

whether the crutches were living up to their promise, trying to

decide whether to post a feeler: Nikki, are you there? Is the

silence good? What's happening? This morning when I woke up, I knew

it was indeed time for the feeler, logged on and there you were,

ahead of me. I don't know how such things happen, but they do. Life

is full of mysteries, and your smile is one of the best mysteries of

all. I shake my head in awe.

Bless you,

Barbara

Hi Everyone,

Thanks SO much for your kind words. It really is a wonderful feeling.

I have to give a lot of credit to my mom, she has worked so hard to

keep me healthy and help me get better. She gives up her time and her

energy, and does it willingly and lovingly. I really could not ask

for a better mom! She is amazing, and I know the day I was discharged

was a really wonderful day for her as well as me :)

Dawn - I have Aetna HMO insurance. They are pretty good!

Thanks again everyone,

Nikki :)

Dear Nikki,

I cannot remember when I have rejoiced more here on Mitoldies than when

I read your recent post. Congratulations on this blessed good news.

I know we must all have been holding our collective breaths after your

mom told us about you. About having a hospital bed in the living room,

about all of the nurses, and about your fragility.

You are a magnificent person, Nikki, and that comes through, even in

cyberspace. I especially love your annual essay about your gratitude.

I have a friend who is a quadriplegiac, and when I have some

exacerbation of the mito, I try to keep Mark in mind. I put you and so

many others here with us in that same category. You try each day to live

with grace and with gratitude, and in so doing, you help each one of us

to keep our own problems in perspective.

Thank you again, Nikki, and it is my prayer that you will continue to

respond to treatment. Please convey my greetings to your family, of whom

I am in awe...

Would that everyone here had such loving caregivers.

Thank you for being an exemplar, for being a gift to all the Mitoldies.
