Guest guest
I love the instant cider mixes, also. The one that I have is SF and it is is 25 calories. (Though if you're sensitve to artificial sweeteners, 2 pts for the sugary version could be a lot worse!) I like to make myself a big mug of strongly brewed Celestial Seasonings Bengal Spice tea and add in a packet of the instant cider mix. It tastes rich and decadent to me... a real treat! Re: Looking for Lo Point Beverages I love the Hot Cider Mix that is found over by the hot chocolate mixes......has real sugar and 80 cal. for a 2 pt drink. I know some might think that 2pts is a lot, but when artificial sweeteners make me sick and I am tired of coffee/water it's a nice treat to have on hand. I also like hot lemonade (just make regular lemonade and heat) this is great when I am sick. I sometimes make a hot cup of chicken/beef bullion and I 'think' that is -0- pts?? Not sure. And on Sundays I always treat myself to a can of soda of my choice for 3 pts., if it's been a not so great week I will split one with my dh for 1.5 pts
Guest guest
Thanks for your suggestions. I'll check for the cider mix. It's nice to meet someone else that has a problem with artificial sweetners. It really limits what you can have. With me it makes my throat itch and I get hoarse. Thanks, Ginny 260-186-129 Goal for 2004 380 Pages Completed 476 Re: Looking for Lo Point Beverages I love the Hot Cider Mix that is found over by the hot chocolate mixes......has real sugar and 80 cal. for a 2 pt drink. Guest guest
I've never heard of stevia extract. Waht is it ? Ginny 260-186-129 Goal for 2004 380 Pages Completed 476 Re: Looking for Lo Point Beverages Hi Ginny, I just joined the group yesterday. I am starting my 3rd week of weight watchers today. AS far as low cal drinks I fix myself fresh lemonaid and drink every day. you can get stevia extract (bulk is cheaper) at the health food store and make it with that. I use an old fashioned hand juicer and squeeze 1 lemon in a 1 liter rubbermaid bottle and then sprinkle in stevia to taste and add water....you can add as much water as you want to water it down if the lemon is too acidy. I avoid aspartame like the plauge, and Diet Rite has splenda instead of aspartame, but splenda is made by putting extra chlorine in sugar molecules and it gives me welts so I don't have that too often. bye cindy Ginny wrote: BlankI'm hoping that some of you have some ideas for me. I'm allergic to aspartame and most artificial sweetners. I can tolerate Splenda but the drinks that I've found that contain it also contain a combination of artificial sweetners. I love V8 but I have to limit it because of the high salt content and the low sodium version is awful. I drink water, seltzer when I'm looking for carbonation and skim milk. What else can you suggest other than coffee and tea for other low point beverages that don't contain artificial sweetners. Thanks for your help. Guest guest
I may have spelled it wrong...here is a cut/paste from a website that tells waht it is. If you've ever tasted stevia, you know it's extremely sweet. In fact, this remarkable noncaloric herb, native to Paraguay, has been used as a sweetener and flavor enhancer for centuries. But this innocuous-looking plant has also been a focal point of intrigue in the United States in recent years because of actions by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The subject of searches and seizures, trade complaints and embargoes on importation, stevia has been handled at times by the FDA as if it were an illegal drug. Since the passage of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA), stevia can be sold legally in the United States, but only as a " dietary supplement. " Even so, it can be found in many forms in most health-food stores, and is also incorporated into drinks, teas and other items (all labeled as " dietary supplements " ). It cannot, however, be called a " sweetener " or even referred to as " sweet. " To do so would render the product " adulterated, " according to the FDA, and make it again subject to seizure. The purpose of our Web site is to provide as much information about stevia as possible, from the scientific studies regarding its safety to the petitions submitted by the Lipton Tea Company and the American Herbal Products Association. Stevia.net will be an ongoing project for us at Body Ecology, so check back often, as we will be augmenting and updating this information frequently Ginny wrote: I've never heard of stevia extract. Guest guest
Wow, that's definately something to look into. The FDA would rather pollute us with chemicals than use a naturaly sweet plant. Guest guest
Call me a cynic, but it is all about the benjamins. Legislation goes where the money is. Food/drug companies have more money to hire lobbyists and therefore more influence when it comes to regulation. <stepping down off my soapbox> Note to list parents: Sorry... that was slightly OT of me. I'll be good from here on out! :-) Re: Looking for Lo Point Beverages Wow, that's definately something to look into. The FDA would rather pollute us with chemicals than use a naturaly sweet plant. Guest guest
I'm sure there is a lot more to it than that. I don't know that the soft drink companies would use it even if it was readily available. Personally I think it tastes nasty myself. Cost is also a major factor in things like this as well, and if chemicals are cheaper then that's what manufactures will use.
