Aletta,

Remember that there are a lot of people running around these days with someone

else's heart, liver, kidney, cornea and blood in them. These are not attempts

to make people live forever, only to an age they should have lived to. Both of

Charlotte's parents lived into their 80's, but Charlotte's mother outlived one

of her daughter's (who smoked and died of lung cancer). Charlotte was only 62.

No, medicine today MUST be a science. To many people today just make

statements about some " natural supplement " helping them, yet when a scientific

study is done 20 people are hurt for every person that is helped in some

cases. Or you are saved from a headache, and die of an irregular heartbeat.

You mention that you think medicine should be plant-based but that goes against

what you say about " I am completely uncomfortable with the concept of having

the DNA God designed for one individual life put in my body " . If you were

vaccinated, you have foreign DNA in your body. Did you ever have a flu shot?

I am an engineer and know the development process for a new instrument or

device. It is often long and slow with many detours AND compromises. Polio

took many, many years to beat - yet it is almost extinct in the USA due to

someone sticking modified DNA into people. Some cancers are already being

cured by sticking modified DNA into you. Now they have cured mice of paralysis

by sticking human cells into the vertebrae. Seems to me that people have been

getting human cells from other people for a hunderd years or so - it's called

blood transfusion. I've had a blood transfusion and glad they could do it.

Take care, Bill Werre

Nonetheless I prefer medicine as an art rather than a science. As an art it is

creative and aspires to the best in man. As a science it becomes a matter of

proving theory, being right is more important than being kind. My two cents on

cloning (and transplants for that matter): I am completely uncomfortable with

the concept of having the DNA God designed for one individual life put in my

body, that was God's work - don't muck with it. I feel better about

engineering artificial body parts and synthetic and plant-based pharmaceutical

(my X has had two implanted lense since his early 30'S which work

beautifully). When did this society become so arrogant as to assume we have an

entitlement to a long and healthy life? Glad to see the artificial heart shows

promise, pacemakers work well (could someone explain the stomach pacemaker Anne

had implanted?) Science is good at exploration, engineers are problem solvers,

doctors apply their knowledge of both for their patient's benefit. OK three

cents worth. Have lovely day all.
