Guest guest
Hey guys, Just a note here...I may not have any computer service after Nov. 30th. Seems Excite@Home (my e mail and web page server) has gone bankrupt and is in court trying to cease providing service to Comcast (the cable company) after the 30th. Since I don't have a phone modem and cannot use an alternative dial up network, I am out of luck. They say it may be weeks to get a new provider!!! EEEGADS!! I won't be able to get any e mail and quite possibly any messages you send to me personally will just bounce around cyberspace, never to be heard from again!!! HAHA So if you hear from me AFTER the 30th, then the court decided in Comcast's favor. If not, then I apologize in advance for not answering any letters that are addressed to me or about me!. Have a great day all, I know mine has just been shot to bits and pieces! Lynne

Guest guest
Lynne, it's not that expensive to pick up an external phone modem if there is some reason you cannot have an internal one. If you have a laptop, you can get a PCMIA card modem which slips right into the slot and you're good to go; it will have a " dongle " for the phone cord to snap into place. If you've got a desktop, an external modem would probably be easier than opening the computer box and installing an internal modem card if you're not that familiar with the innards... Ack, I can't imagine not having computer access! I have my cable service (not @home, thankfully) and I also kept my dial-up service that I had used previously with the thought that occasionally the cable might go down...and that HAS happened a few times. So you might want to seriously consider getting an external modem rather than going weeks and weeks without internet/email access... You could get a pretty reasonable dialup service on a month-to-month basis until your cable situation is resolved... Think about it! --Connie

Oh, yes, I should think that you DO have an internal modem. Most recent-vintage desktop computers come with them! Some laptops don't, though... If you've got the internal modem, then you're good to go! Just pick a dialup service and sign up... >Is your >provider?. If I am not mistaken, they are also affected as is A.T.&T. Actually, thank goodness, (at least in my particular area) is NOT affected by this. This morning's Washington POST reiterated that. does not use some of the same cable connections that were being provided through excite (AT) home (DOT) It's Road Runner and part of the Time-Warner organization, but our segment of it is apparently not affected. Whew! However, if I WERE affected, I still have dial-up service and would be still able to remain connected... Comcast, which is indeed another local cable provider in the DC area (using the name " Cablespeed " here), will be hurting a lot of customers tomorrow if things shut down. One of my friends is in the situation you are. She's upset, too, because she's only had the cable service a few months and had given up her dialup ISP (AOL), although I had warned her that it's a good idea to keep a dialup service as backup... Other friends who had been using @home are quickly signing up with dial-up ISPs while they can still get online easily, covering all bases... It's a really unfortunate situation and is going to definitely have a major impact on the cable industry, not to mention millions of people... --Connie
