(She had initially said she didn't think it was severe enough however we have been told it may border on moderate). One of the things she also said to me at this time is that she didn't know if we would have as much success because his plagio was prior to his birth. Have other people also heard something like this? I am of course hoping for the best and hope it is not true. We were very pleased with her results. He got his band at just under 6 months and was out of it in 8 weeks (we hit a growth spurt when he was first in his band). His head is still high (only growing will fix that), but the back and his forehead look great. His brachy and plagio is 100% from birth and although the doctor did say his head shape was one of the harder ones to correct he said nothing about before or after birth being an issue. I also hope it is not true, so lets both believe that and have confidence it will get better!! Guest guest Posted December 18, 2006 Report Share Posted December 18, 2006 I thought he said it was harder to correct simply because of the shape and that there wasn't firm areas to grip the helmet, I believe that brachy is harder to treat than plagio alone and our main concern has been the brachy. Did you learn anything else? Guest guest Posted December 18, 2006 Report Share Posted December 18, 2006 Hi, sometimes they say brachy is harder to correct because it is sort of like plagio on two sides - meaning both sides of the head are flat and need to fill in which requires more growth. however, most babies with only brachy don't have facial or ear assymetry, so in my mind that made it easier (at least mentally). correcting brachy requires only banding, but often plagio comes with tort so PT/stretches are needed to restore full range of motion. moms of tort babies have to do stretches at home and usually PT appointmets too. Guest guest Posted December 18, 2006 Report Share Posted December 18, 2006 I've heard the brachy/plagio combo is the hardest to treat/fit. I think our STARband never fit well because there was too much room to grow in the back to address the brachy which meant it didn't have enough holding points to keep it from rotating. I saw a post a while ago where a mom said her DOCband ortho told her that they address the plagio first and the brachy second and that seems to be true for my son's DOCband too. I've never directly asked my ortho about the design, but his DOCband is definitely much flatter in the back than his STARband. It has done a great job of helping the asymmetry, so I'm hoping his second DOCband (due 12/28) will help with the brachy. I've heard the rumor of in-utero plagio/brachy being harder to correct (and maybe that's why my son is taking so long rather than a bad fitting first band??) but it doesn't make sense to me since it's the growth that matters in the correction. Maybe it's just harder since those babies tend to be more severe since they start off 'flat' and tend to just get 'flatter'?? Our ortho told us plagio was the hardest to fit because the band had the most tendency to spin around and rub onto their face, etc....I think the brachy shape has more filling out to do - 1/2 instead of 1/4, but the band can essentially hold on both sides of the head, if that makes sense, so it stays in place better. Guest guest Posted December 19, 2006 Report Share Posted December 19, 2006 I can't remember exactly where I first heard that brachy/plagio is the hardest to correct, but I've seen a few posts over the months that mention the same thing. Our DOCband is nearly flat across the back which I think is designed to direct growth out the right side (the flat side). I think it also helps hold the helmet in place and keep it from rotating. He was 90.5% at the start of the DOCband with 8mm asymmetry, so it's really the asymmetry that was the main issue, not the brachy. Since the right side has recently 'popped out' at the base and looks almost the same as the left side I'm hoping the new band will have a little more room in the back to address the brachy. Even with a flat looking band he has gone from 90.5 to 87.5% in the last 4 months. He looks pretty good and if he only goes down 3% more in the next 4 months I'll still be thrilled. I read a study a while back which had a pretty small sample size, but in the study the average of the back sleeping countries was 84%, so in my mind, that will be 'normal'. Guest guest Posted December 19, 2006 Report Share Posted December 19, 2006 My only guess about addressing the brachy after the plagio is that they meant they would get both sides evened up before shaving away foam directly in the back. In my son's case the DOCband looks almost flat across the back and hugs his head all the way around to the middle of the back of his head with room to grow mainly on the right side. I has suspected/hoped they'd shave away foam in the middle of the back to help the brachy, but his head growth has been pretty slow, so I think he reached the 'expiration' point (4 months) before they got to that point. The old STARband only touched his head over on the left side with a lot of room directly in the back which I think made it harder to keep it from rotating.
