Guest guest
Can someone please help me? My son (Ben) is a the point behaviorally he was 2 years ago plus some language. I don't know what happened but for a couple weeks now hes been obnoxious. For example, pooping in his pants again, smearing food on the floor, squealing so loud at night and in the morning that if I want to get any sleep I have to put in earplugs and two pillows over my head. He's self stimming on anything he can find to shake and when he can't find anything he runs around squealing and snapping his fingers together, jumping in front of the tv.....etc. I can not pin point any changes. Hes on the same diet (gfcf+some), same therapies, except the past 2 weeks, can't even do his home program because he sits there screaming and crying. No dramatic changes that I can think of. He just finished a bottle of nystatin, which I understand there can be a die off reaction to but he's behaving the same as before he started the nystatin. Can someone please direct me on what I should do? Obviously I'm going to call his doctor but he's not a Dan dr. I am considering going to the pfieffer clinic because I have a feeling it's something internally. Thanks in advance for any advice. Guest guest
Renea, Three things-- either gets this way a week or two prior to showing signs of an illness, and, second, he also regresses if he is actually about to make a major developmental triumph--I would check with his school or therapists to see if Ben has been making some type of progress, which can be upsetting and wearing out his behavioral responses; ultimately, goes through this for a couple of weeks, as he body accepts his new developmental progression, and then comes out a couple of weeks later farther ahead of where he was prior to his "episode." If you are doing any type of Floortime, I would suggest going back to Ben's earlier comfort zones, in order to help to enter his world. Also, when was younger, and the weather became cooler and he had to be inside more, he would get very aggressive and behaviorally out of whack, and we would come up with places, such as Mcs, Chuck E. Cheese, play areas at the mall, the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum, where he could get out and move around, and when we went to these places, no matter how would be, we would just remind ourselves that no matter how he initially reacted, it was better to get him out, then be locked away, and we would repeat the mantra regarding the stares of strangers "we will never see these people again, we will never see these people again, over and over. Rich will even take for a jog around the block--I can't keep up with them, even if we have to bundle him up, to help him work out his aggressions. Guest guest
Hi, Renea: Have you been to Pfeiffer at all yet? If not, I just want to let you know and all the other members, that they have recently increased their prices. I believe the initial visit is still at about $1,100, which includes testing and the primer, which is the first thing they take before starting on the other nutrients and MTPII. The follow up visits have doubled in price, from about $450 to $950ish. They stated that some of their charges may be covered by insurance, depending on which you have, and you would have to discuss that with them. I don't think much was coded before to be covered at all. I still think Pfeiffer is great and we saw a lot of improvements from it. Lynn > Can someone please help me? Guest guest
Biomedically speaking, I agree with . Sounds like YEAST. The next thing I would rule out is PHENOL/SALYCILATE exposure and the third would be a GFCF infraction. How long has he been on the nystatin and how much time has passed since he was on an antibiotic? I don't understand why he would do this BEFORE the nystatin. Is someone at school letting him use something for OT that is causing a dietary infraction? The fragrance in shaving cream can make some kids nutty. If it's a phenol issues, Epsom salts baths may help. You can do two a day (the half life of the sulfation effect is 4 - 9 hours) according to Owens, the sulfation expert. You can find her on the yahoo group SulfurStories. Call the school and ask them if they've done anything different. Tell them you're doing some detective work, and you need their help. Painted the room? Substitute teacher? Anyone wearing a new perfume? New Deodorant? Has he done shaving cream play a lot? Or play doh? Given him a " wheat free " food that isn't " gluten free " ? Did a flourescent light break in the classroom, or have they changed the bulbs lately? ANYTHING, tell them, you want to know ANYTHING that might give you a clue. " Is This Your Child?, " by Doris Rapp MD may give you some insight. Go over to the enzymesandautism group or autism-mercury or the abmd group or pfeifferautispatients and post. Dana from Dana's View (www.danasview.net) is a mom who has been through a lot with yeast and phenols, and she may be able to direct your research more specifically than I can. But if it's yeast, you may be able to use some grapeFRUIT seed extract or some Olive Leaf Extract or some other supps to help. You may need some enzymes or maybe even some activated charcoal if he's having a die-off reaction. So far, Alyssa hasn't had yeast issues, so I am just throwing things out there for you to research. The yeast guys are Crooks MD (The Yeast Connection) and Bruce Semon MD (Feast Without Yeast). Dawn is right, too, and often regressions are multifaceted (more than one tack). We often see really scary regressions before a gigantic spurt in forward development, sort of like one of those toy cars that you put on the floor and drag backwards, then you let go of it and it shoots across the floor. If you're not brushing him at home, you might try brushing him often (Wilbarger protocol) for more sensory input, lots of " Ben sandwiches " (we use two giant floor pillows to mash Alyssa between), and whatever sensory input you can give him. Good luck, Penny > Can someone please help me? My son (Ben) is a the point behaviorally he was 2 years ago plus some language. Guest guest
I wish i had a magic answer for you. I certaintly understand you as I have a very low functioning autistic son who has had many behavioral problems. Maybe the best advise i could give you is to go for some metabolic testing. I have heard excellent things about a Dr Natovicz (not sure of spelling) at the Cleveland clinic. I have spoken to him myself on the phone and he is wonderful. Cleveland is not that far. Guest guest
In all seriousness, i really meant Dr Natovicz (check spelling) at Cleveland Clinic, in Cleveland, obviously. I didnt know they have a branch of some sort in Florida. I am learning how important it is to check for metabolic disorders. I really believe everyone who has a kid dx with autism should go to a good metabolisist. I wish i knew that when my son was younger. I hope you guys with the young ones are reading this and taking it seriously. You can run after gfcf diets, yeast controle therapy, chelation therapy etc, and i dont say these things dont have any value, but sometimes a kid could have a metabolic disorder that just has some of the same symptoms as autism. Some of these disorders can be treated! And the time to do it is when they're young. If your child doesnt have a metabolic disorder, at least you know you ruled it out, and if he/she does, you'll be so glad you found out because getting th proper treatment can make all the difference in the world. rivky >From: "Lynn" >Reply-To: EverydayMiraclesAutism >To: EverydayMiraclesAutism >Subject: Re: need advice (long) >Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2003 20:46:32 -0000 > > >And if you wanted to make a vacation out of it, Cleveland Clinic has >locations in sunny Florida, too. > > > > > Gift-shop online from the comfort of home at MSN Shopping!
