With your sister just having gone through surgery herself (and did you say your mother had also?) you have enough family history that dieting won't work. Ugh! I'm sitting here with tears for you. Guest guest
W hat I don't understand is how he is going to prove you could keep any weight off on such a diet. I would have easily lost 20 pounds on a closely supervised atkins diet before having surgery. However, I would have gained 30 back in the next few months. Do you have to have a referral for your insurance??? Tell him it is an issue of long term maintainance. Ask him to give you research and personal experience showing people have kept the weight off after doing this program. Dawn
Guest guest
I'm so sorry...how frustrating. I did Atkins and yes I lost weight...but that is a very hard way to eat for life and while I understand the ideas behind it...I think you need more balance in your diet to keep the weight off. At least a month isnt long but I know as I'm waiting to get my first dr visit, its forever when you've made up your mind on what you want to do... Guest guest
Stella, Everyone's right. Time for a new PCP, that is if you can find a WLS- friendly one. I had a PCP for 13 years and decided it was time to change. One of the members of this group refered me to a WLS- friendly PCP. With my old one, I knew I never stood a chance of having surgery. And if so, It would have been the wrong one surgery. You have to do what's right for you. This is your life, not his. Please let us know what you decide to do. Guest guest
Stella, This may not be as bad as you think. For one thing, some insurance companies require proof of medically supervised diets, usually within the last year. For another, some insurance companies are reticent to approve readily if you go to a new pcp and get your referral. If you have a relationship with your PCP and feel that he will write you a LOMN after giving this diet a 4 week try, then why not. 4 weeks is really not that long in the scheme of things and you have no guarantee that your new PCP will agree with WLS. It may take you that long to get a new pcp and an appointment. Now, if you think your current pcp will really not help you no matter what you do, then by all means find another. Guest guest
Thank you, everyone, for your words of wisdom and support. This doctor is very much against WLS period, and wants to try to prove to me that it's just a matter of self-discipline and determination. This is despite my telling hinm I've been on every diet under the sun and have lost and gained and lost and gained on them all. I know it's a matter of self-discipline; however, if that were all it took I wouldn't be in the shape I'm in now! He is my PCP because he is also my DH's, and the doctor used by his company for their drug screenings, etc. I can find another and establish a new relationship if after this month he still won't give me the referral, which I do need for insurance coverage. But I am going to give him his month first and then we'll see. And BTW he's skinny... --stella

You do what you think is best.. sure, you could humor him with Atkins diet but he'll never really be convinced you didnt 'give it your all'. My mother is the same way.. even tho she's supportive of my decision, she thinks its a matter of mental attitude.. i told her that she didnt have a clue what she was talking about , and if taht's all there was to it, SHE'd be a size 8, not a 14!!! She didnt like that too much.. truth hurts sometimes. Guest guest
> And BTW he's skinny...> Stella, Don't ya just hate it? Oh, how I sympathize with you! I went through diets for 13 years with my ex-PCP. He was a very likable guy, but thought weight could be maintained by running 300 miles every morning and starving yourself to death! LOL : ) My ex-PCP was a thin man and jogged every morning and went to the gym probably every day. Great for people who can do that. Unfortunately, people like this do not live realistic lives. They think that because they are thin, and have no problems maintaining their weight, that everyone else should be the same way. The last time I went to him was last May. I begged him to put me on a liquid protein fast. I knew it wasn't going to work, but this was my last attempt at " one more diet " before I made the big decision to have WLS. His comment was.... " let's try another diet, one more time... " under his breath. It really hurt my feelings. By this time I had dieted my way up the scale to 302 pounds. I lost 14 pounds on this diet, and it was killing me. I was starving all of the time. I then said, screw it and changed PCP's a couple of times just trying to find the right WLS-friendly doctor. I sent out my plea to everyone on this list asking everyone if they knew of a doctor that was WLS in the greater Los Angeles area. Kathy P. replied back and told me about Dr. Forman who is in the same building as Dr. Anthone. Thanks to Kathy P., I will probably be having surgery in about one month. Please, please, do not give up hope. There are other doctors out there that do agree with WLS. Hugs, Debbie Jamil

Guest guest
Stella, Now this is just my opinion but why give him the time of day? The adkins diet has been booed by most of the medical world as totally unsafe. What you lose in pounds you gain in cholestral. It is a diet guaranteed to fail. But not at first. At first you will lose weight (If you stick to it and eat absolutely zero carbs for 21 days) You need 2 types of proteins to live normally and they are complete protein found in animals and incomplete protein found in potatos rice breads beans nuts, etc. I had a friend that went on this stupid diet and lost 50 pounds but his cholestral went from 190 to 275 and now he takes lipator. This diet can cause changes in your blood sugar. Blood sugar needs a certain amount of carbs to regulate. If you do not ingest those carbs then your liver makes enzymes (sugar) to balance out the production of insulin. If this doctor really wanted had your best interests at heart he would have sent you to a nutritionalist. You would best spend your time looking for a PCP that is WLS friendly. Or at least understands that obesity is NOT a self-discipline issue for everyone. My PCP brought tears to my eyes when he said to me: " Most overweight people have more discipline in their big toes than a skinny person. " We became obese because of genes or forks but we became morbidly obese because of diets. Stand up for yourself, because no one is going to do it for you. 5 months ago I got on fasten for 3 months and lost 20 pounds. I got on the scales the other day and have gained it all back plus 5 pounds. I did not eat much because I did not get hungry. When I finished the 3 month course of fasten, my apetite came back and so did the weight. Oh, well! that is the story of my diet life.
