Hi!

How is the healthcare in Canada? Is it socialized medicine?

Have you any of you used the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto? Have you

seen or heard anything about Dr. Ingrid Tein? I know she has done research

into carnitine transporter gene defect and FOD's. I think she maybe even found

the OCTN2 gene.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks!

, I will let the Canadian patients speak for their health

care system, though I have heard from many Canadian patients over

the years, both good and not-so-good stories regarding that system.

Just wanted to add that Dr. Ingrid Tein is highly respected

internationally and I have heard many good things about her from US

experts and Canadian patients.

Thelma-

Good to hear from you. I'm sorry for the troubles you've had with the

healthcare and physicians. Glad to know that the supplements are helping you

and that you are holding onto that hope of a getting a definitive Dx.

Best of luck,

Hi , I hope you are doing well. I have not seen Dr. Ingrid

Tein, but I have heard she is very good. And that Sick Kids is a very

good hospital. I have had referrals to some mito doctors, but no one

has been able to diagnose me yet. I am still optimistic about one day

getting diagnosed. I am doing well for now on Co-enzyme Q10 and mega

B vitamins, and have wondered if I might have thiamine responsive

pyruvate dehydrogenase deficiency that another list member has on the

site. What frustrates me here is the general practitioners

are the ones with the power to refer you to specialists and the

specialists can turn you down if they don't want to see you. I saw

one a few times who had some knowledge of mito, did refer me to

another specialist, but later on refused to see me again. I think it

was because she believed she couldn't help me, but anyways I thought

it was rude.
