Hi, -

This is a perfect follow up to Sue's earlier question - what is the proper

protocol for cancerous lymph nodes discovered after TT and before ablation?

Everything I have read leads me to believe that the doctor (radiologist, I

assume) is correct that the RAI will not kill these additional tumors, and that

surgical removal is the way to go. I'm impressed that he examined your neck -

I don't think my radiologist/nuclear med doctor ever examined my neck, but

followed what was seen on the scans.

It is indeed possible for thyca to spread to lymph nodes outside the neck,

although I believe it's rather unusual for that to be the first location for

distant mets.

started actually dealing with having cancer and accepting my scar, then I got a

wrench thrown at me...Thursday I went to Portsmouth, VA to have a consult with

the doctor who will be doing my RAI. When he examined my neck, he felt a lump by

my right tonsil. He had me go have a full neck ultra sound and sure enough, it

is 3 lymph nodes fused together, for a measurement of 3.2 cm. And the US also

showed a lymph node on the left side of my neck (by my tonsil) that is 1.7 cm in

size. The doc said that he wants those removed before he does the ablation,

because they are indicative of papillary carcinoma and the RAI won't completely

kill them. So I left there feeling confused...and 4 hours to drive and ponder on

having surgery again so soon.

surgery) first thing Friday morning and he didn't seem to clear things up...I

think because he was a bit confused himself about it. So I was wondering if all

of this sounded right to you guys, to have cancerous cells all the way up there.

I guess it is possible, but something just isn't sitting right with me about it.

My ENT wants to examine me himself, of course, and probably do an FNA on the

largest mass. Have any of you had a similar situation? Or any suggestions? And

is it possible for this type of cancer to spread to lymph nodes not in the neck

(the rest of the body)?
