Guest guest
Shona, As you can see from my signature I am on my second band as are several others on this list. As other people will tell you everybody responds differently to the band and this is doublely true for the second band, ie. The reaction will not be the same as the first. In my situation I had no problems with the first one, up to the when it slipped and had to be replaced, but the second one has been “a real pain in the gut”. It started when the Prof noticed I had a hernia through my diaphragm which he attempted to fix but unfortunately this didn’t work and he had to go back in a week later to fix it. The two operations irritated my stomach greatly which resulted in difficulties swallowing liquid. As a result I finished up spending 15 days out of 19 days in hospital mostly on a drip. When things settled down I found I had reasonable restriction with an empty tank. Unfortunately I was also suffering reflux. This we managed to control with zantac. However trouble with reflux really began when we tried putting point 5 of a mil in the tank. I found I was just about drowning during the night. We tried taking out .2. This made it easier but it was still there. We again took out another .2 and now the reflux is mostly under control. Unfortunately this means I now have to be very careful about my diet. As to your other questions about rate of lose with the second band, well this all depends, as with the first one, with how much you have to lose. The more there is to lose the faster the rate will be. This is assuming you follow all the guidelines properly. The problem I found was with the motivation. With the first one I had no problems with the guidelines but I am having lots of trouble keeping to them currently. I havn't posted for quite a while as i was on holiday in the USA for 3 months . I did enjoy getting online every now and again and seeing how everyone was doing whilst I was away. Your progress has been inspiring. Without fluid in my band due to a slippage earlier in the year, I have to confess I did enjoy some 'forbidden foods' that were readily available. Well, i have just been back in hospital for replacement of my band. I am coping much better this time. With the first band I suffered terribly with nausea and vomiting ( which may have contributed to the slippage ) anyways, i have felt really good. I could hardly remember what guidelines I had to follow so have been reading up my lapband book and have found the NZ lapbanders website really helpful. I am not really looking forward to the 2-4 weeks on fluids, however it may help me shift some of the weight I have gained. I would be interested to hear of other's experiences with their second band. Have you noticed anything different? Is the rate of weight loss more/less/ the same? I will try to keep you up to date with how I go. I have to admit I felt a little apprehensive posting again as I was really hoping that the first band would be something I couldn't fail with. Still , onward and downwards ( weight -wise of course. ) Look forward to chatting with you all soon. By the way, any confirmation on a Perth get-together for Christmas? i would love to come.
