Guest guest
My son had severe brachy and got his DOC Band at 5 months. His CI was 98% before we started. He wore the band for 10 weeks until he was 7 months old. At the halfway point, his measurements had gone down to 91%. They did not do measurements again at the exiting so I don't know what he is now. When I look at his head now (he has been out of the band for 1 1/2 weeks) it still looks pretty flat on the right side. CT did not recommend a 2nd helmet saying that we would probably see only minimal improvement with it. However, when I look at his head today it doesn't look like he had ANY treatment at all!! Here are my questions to all of you: Could he have regressed in 1 1/2 weeks? How many people went for a 2nd band against CT recommendations? Are there any alternative therapies to work on his head shape? HELP!!!! I am driving myself CRAZY!
Guest guest
Hi , my son is 13 1/2 months and has about 3 months left in second docband. he had/has moderate plagio, no tort. about a month ago i started looking into alternative therapies to do in conjunction with band. i joined older plagio group and got great info. there is something called craniosacral therapy that chiros, osteopathic doctors, or therapists can do. they massage the head and actually move the bones back into place. yesterday my son just had his 5th adjustment and craniosacral therapy (CST) with a chiro. now i havent seen anything really visible yet in his head, but yesterday my chiro said that the one ridge on the top of his head where the bones are pushed together is starting to smooth out, so the bones are moving. so i am hoping that this will work to fix what the band cannot. my son looks a lot better than when he started, but given that is he over 1 year, i didnt want to wait until done with second band to start something else. now your son is still super young, but i did hear that brachy is harder to correct with band, again no experience in that area. anyway, sorry to ramble, but maybe CST could help without getting another band. also, my son is really misaligned. i feel that even if his head or asymmetry doesnt change significantly, it will have been worthwhile... just since we started with chiro and CST, my son is babbling so much more and more tolerant of being on all 4s, he doest crawl very well, but excellent walker. again, probably too much info, but you should join olderplag group on . it is so helpful. well i hoped any of my story helps you. good luck and let me know if you have any more questions. > My son had severe brachy and got his DOC Band at 5 months. Guest guest
Hi , there are definitely parents who got a second band that CT didn't think was worth it. there does have to be enough holding points for the band to make the helmet sit properly. Here is a case study: http://www.cranialtherapies.com/index.php/case_studies/case_study/brachycephaly/ If you're not happy with his head now you should try and correct it. good luck (you're not crazy) -christine mom to sydney/ 11 mo / starband grad 11-06 > > My son had severe brachy and got his DOC Band at 5 months. Guest guest
Hi , I got my daughter a second band despite Cranial Technologies telling me she was " mild " . When I took her to Hanger, I found out she was still bad. She wore a docband for 7 weeks between the ages of 4 and 6 months. She got her second band (hanger) at 8 months. Even almost 4 months into her second band, her symmetry is still very bad. I'm beginning to think there is no way we will get her to " normal " but we have improved things a lot. Looking back, I think our clinicians at CT were crazy to tell me she was " mild " and to " get over it " . Even now, her asymmetry would be considered moderate to severe. BTW, CT's final measurements were wrong and I have a scan to prove it. They may have been looking at the measurements when determining she was " mild " . One look at her head and face though, told a different story. Her head shape still makes me very sad. I can't imagine how sad I would be had I not gotten a second one. I don't know much about Brachy since my daughter has plagio, but it wouldn't hurt to get a second opinion so you know early whether you have a shot at more improvement. All I can say is I wish I hadn't trusted Cranial Technologies (IL)and had sought a second opinion sooner. I wasted a couple months of fast growth. we'll be very lucky if we get her to 90% symmetry. Guest guest
Hi , If you're not happy with your son's head shape I would definitely talk to them about getting a second band. At 7 months your son is definitely young enough to see more correction. My son got his second band, a DOCband, (the first a STARband that didn't fit well) at 12 months. We've seen a definite improvement in the last 3 months, but not enough to satisfy me, so we're going for a 3rd band at the end of the month. Our DOCband ortho said the decision was up to me. When I asked him about a possible prognosis he said he would still see some improvement (he'll be 16 months when he gets his third band) and that if it were up to him he would put every baby in multiple bands. Maybe your location is just more sensitive to 'pushing' a second band, but I would definitely tell them you're not happy yet. Good luck!
