Say if the intern was almost finished with his/her internship, and is almost ready to go into private practice for themselves, could he/she perform a DS with another assistant who is also a intern. I do know that when I had my surgery the 2 females who were training to be anesthelogist put me to sleep with out an anesthelogist being present. I know this for a fact, because I questioned them and they told me this themselves. I was worried, but they assured me they had done it many times, and knew what they were doing. Residents are MDs who are in additional training. Fellows are MDs following residency who go for highly specialized training. Your story sounds like you were dealing with Anesthesiologist Residents. Each patient has to have an attending physician/surgeon. I can't imagine one of them taking on the medical liability risk of having a resident perform a surgery without them being present and in charge. I can see that you might be under the anesthetic before the attending arrives, however. Guest guest Posted February 4, 2001 Report Share Posted February 4, 2001 I would not allow a resident, 1, 2 or 10 continue with an induction, intubation and anesthesia administration to surgical/operative level without an attending or nurse anestisist (sp) being present. Yes, a resident is an actual doctor who has chosen to continue their studies by working under the tutelage of another doctor or doctors. Becoming a resident is normally standard practice for most doctors, but they are not required to do so. Once a person has passed medical school, they can become licensed to practice medicine, even without undertaking a residency somewhere. If you do not wish to have a resident doctor work on you, you should state that up front, and let them know which doctor you would like working on you. The resident would not be allowed to operate on their own if the main doctor was not completely confident of their skills, however, I would imagine the main doctor was close by, if not in the room, and would not let the resident do anything stupid.
