Guest guest
Dear Celia, I just read an article that there is a compound in blueberies that will lower cholesterol, and it is known that oats will. This summer I have eaten blueberries frequently and have had Cheerios each morning. I see my endo in 2 weeks and will be interested to see if my cholesterol is down. When I saw a cardiologist last year he had me have an ultrafast cardiac CT-scan ($500., and ins. does not cover this exam), and I have zero blockages. Very unusual for someone with diabetes for 20 years and elevated cholesterol. The angina I get is from muscle spasms (Prinzmetal's). Sounds like a mito thing to me. Also, I have not eaten any mammals in 20+ years, because of my love for animals. Good luck as you keep seeking answers. PA
Guest guest
I haven't been diagnosed with Mito yet, but am unable to tolerate ANY of the statin drugs (horrible cramping etc) so my doc just prescribed Colestid (non statin). She did warn me, however, of possible severe constipation. Havent'started it yet, but she's at a loss of what else to try!! Good luck and lets us know what your doc recommends. ~Kathy~ > Dear Groupies, I have been having problems with my cholesterol (and > BP) for some time. Guest guest
Omega-3's are a natural way to lower cholesterol. I have not had high cholesterol levels, but have taken the omega-3's for a few years now. I just had my levels done and my cholesterol is only 139, and I wasn't even fasting at the time. I know they have lowered my Laurie's as well. jstkathy52004 wrote: >I haven't been diagnosed with Mito yet, but am unable to tolerate >ANY of the statin drugs (horrible cramping etc) so my doc just >prescribed Colestid (non statin). Guest guest
This is an excellent suggestion. Additionally, eating fish (broiled is best) and using olive oil are another ways to get Omega 3. There are more and I'll see if I can find them unless someone else beats me to it. Here is a quick summary of some of the benefits of Omega 3 besides lowering Cholesterol. a.. Improve rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Raynaud's disease, and other autoimmune diseases. Diets high in omega-3 fatty acids (such as fish oils) have been shown to increase survival in people with autoimmune diseases. This is probably because the omega-3s help the arteries--as well as many other parts of the body--stay inflammation free. EPA and DHA are successful at this because they can be converted into natural anti-inflammatory substances called prostaglandinshttp://www.wholehealthmd.com/refshelf/glossary_popup/1,1528,86,00\ ..html> and leukotrienes, compounds that help decrease inflammation and pain. In numerous studies over the years, participants with inflammatory diseases have reported less joint stiffness, swelling, tenderness, and overall fatigue when taking omega-3s. In 1998, an exciting review of well-designed, randomized clinical trials reported that omega-3 fatty acids were more successful than a placebo ( " dummy drug " ) in improving the condition of people with rheumatoid arthritis. The research also showed that getting more omega-3 fatty acids enabled some participants to reduce their use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). a.. Improve depression and symptoms of other mental health problems. The brain is remarkably fatty: In fact, this organ is 60% fat and needs omega-3s to function properly. Now researchers have discovered a link between mood disorders and the presence of low concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids in the body. Apparently, omega-3s help regulate mental health problems because they enhance the ability of brain-cell receptors to comprehend mood-related signals from other neurons in the brain. In other words, the omega-3s are believed to help keep the brain's entire traffic pattern of thoughts, reactions, and reflexes running smoothly and efficiently. Clinical trials are underway to further investigate whether supplementing the diet with omega-3s will reduce the severity of such psychiatric problems as mild to moderate depression, dementia, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Interestingly, the oil used to help the child with a degenerative nerve disorder in the popular film Lorenzo's Oil was an omega-3 fatty acid. a.. Aid cancer prevention and cancer support. Preliminary research from the University of California, Los Angeles, suggests that omega-3 fatty acids may help maintain healthy breast tissue and prevent breast cancer. Also, in a recent study, participants who supplemented their diet with fish oils produced fewer quantities of a carcinogen associated with colon cancer than did a placebo group. More research into this exciting use for omega-3s is underway. Alice Omega-3's are a natural way to lower cholesterol. I have not had high cholesterol levels, but have taken the omega-3's for a few years now. I just had my levels done and my cholesterol is only 139, and I wasn't even fasting at the time. Guest guest
Celia already mentioned the Omega 3 oils. I had been on Lipitor and Zocor for 3 years with only a small drop. After 6 months on the Omega 3, both my cholesterol and triglycerides were in the med. normal range. Qestrin is primary for the triglycerides, not cholesterol. It can also be very constipating. They put our mother on it to firm up her bowels. laurie > > Reply-To: > Date: Wed, 01 Sep 2004 19:07:02 -0000 > To: > Subject: Quick Cholesterol question > > Dear Groupies, I have been having problems with my cholesterol (and > BP) for some time. Guest guest
-Thanks brenda, Maybe I should make an effort to eat more blueberries. I do try to eat oats often, it's just that my tum doesn't always like to do that. I am not a meat eat either, so who knows why the cholesterol is such a problem. Guest guest
Dear and Laurie (and I do realize you are sibblings!!_) Trying the Omega 3's sounds a good idea. Do you just buy them at the Health Foood store, or are they a presdcription. Yes- the questrin is constipating, something I don't really need to increase the problem with. I didn't realize they were more for triglycerides, so I;ll have to check this out with the doc tomorrow. Thanks for the input, Celia > Celia > > already mentioned the Omega 3 oils. Guest guest
Thanks Alice, I do kno about eating fish, but the problem is with my gastroparesis and not being able to stomach them. If I can take some Omega three capsules, that sounds like a useful suggestion. Guest guest
That is the generic and it really isn't more for tri's than cholesterol from my reseach. The powder form may help with tri's in addition to the cholesterol, but not the pill form. cghng888 wrote: >I knew I was spelling it wrong too. Guest guest
Cholestramine is what Dr Cohen told my endocrinolgist that I should be taking and what was prescribed for me. My endo made direct contact with him before she would prescribe anything. He told her that under no terms was I to be put on a statin drug. He also told my primary care physician the same thing in a letter written last March. Alice That is the generic and it really isn't more for tri's than cholesterol from my reseach. Guest guest
Doesn't it seem strange with all the problems with Statins that docs don't at least TRY the non-statins with people before starting them on the statins? My husband's cholesterol is almost 300 and his triglerides are almost 500. The doc put him on Lipitor without trying anything else and didn't even give him exercise & diet guidance. The drug companies have WAY too much power over the docs. A ADAMS wrote: >Cholestramine is what Dr Cohen told my endocrinolgist that I should be taking and what was prescribed for me. Guest guest
-Dear , Unfortunately this is all too common a problem in medicine today, (as a nurse, I feel I can comment). They are often too quick to prescribe meds without giving the other councelling to go with it. This is truy in so many areas. My doc didn't agree with me trying out diet and questran (I think I got the spelling there) first, she just wanted me to jump right on the statins. This attitude on the part of physicians, is partly the reason of the problems with antibiotic strains of bacteria developing. Doc have just been so quick over the years to prescribe these wonder drugs. of course now they are pulling back to try and correct the problem.
