RE: Re: Having doubts...

Dear Jo

I personally don't know about whether its famine mode, and most dieticians I talk to give you a different opinion, but one thing we do know pretty much for sure is that if the band was taken out almost all of us would zoom back up those scales in double-quick time. If we were able to really "change" in our heads our approach to food, at least some of those weight loss programs we have all experienced would have worked. We didn't get into this position because we are stupid, but because, for a variety of reasons, we can't help ourselves.

Now, I might be wrong here but did Sue 's post frighten you? It sure did me, and I have been banded 6 months! Sue, I would hazard a guess, is a pretty extraordinary and focussed woman, and I congratulate her hugely on what she has been able to achieve, but may I say that her exercise and food choices would not be typical of the vast majority of bandsters. To be frank, if we could acheive what she has, many of us would not have needed the band in the first place.

First, after the stomach and associated "bits" have settled down after the op, most people can eat pretty much anything. That is why you need a fill. Now, after that, the "fill" regime differs markedly from doctor to doctor, but speaking personally, mine has been delightfully slow and gentle. Just after I was banded, I had the horrors that I would never be able to eat a Junior burger ever again, or drink a diet coke, or have roast potatoes. It really horrified me. In fact, before my first fill, I could eat anything anad I thought maybe the op hadn't worked! Then, after the first fill, I could eat a lot less, was full very quickly, and stopped enjoying chips and donuts. Now, this bit is important. I ADORED chips, and if anyone had said I wouldn't be able to eat them after the op, I probably wouldn't have gone ahead. I can tell you now, I CHOOSE not to eat them because they make me feel uncomfortable. I could eat a donut, but who would want to? It would take me forever to get it down, and the whole pleasure of it just isn't there anymore. But importantly, I do NOT feel particularly deprived in this respect.

My weight loss has not been heroic, and I have to tell you, I am a bit of a cheater, but that is fine with me. I am having a bit more of a fill this Friday (I am up to 2cc), which will no doubt take any hunger away, so that the urge to cheat (not the ability) will go also.

To give you guys a bit of a contrast (and I can't believe I am confessing to this!) I will tell you what I consumed today.

Breakfast: Half a skinny latte (Was full, didn't want anything more).

Morning Tea: Cup of tea.

Lunch: Glass of Black-current juice, regular pack of KFC chicken pop-corn, cup of tea, 1 chicken nugget. (was full as a goog!)

Happy hour (!), mini pack of s crisps, 2 lindt chocolate balls and 2 scotch and diet cokes.

Dinner: Lasagne. Prob about 60gms. Glass of champagne. Felt abs stuffed.

Supper: Home-made cookie.....threw it up. Was way too full, and only had it out of old habit, and it was the last one in the tin and looked lonely.

Tonight, I will have my multi-vitamin. Today I got my full blood tests back and every single result was spot on perfect. ly, I have not been healtheir in my life.

Excercise??? Today (or yesterday)....none, other than running around after my four kids, running my practice, and mopping up after the Nanny pranged the car. I really want to improve in this regard however, but NOT to lose weight, because I'm just not like that, (it ain't gonna happen) but because I think mentally it will do me the world of good to get out on my own for half an hour into the fresh air.

If any-one dobs me in to the doctors or the dietician, I swear I will never speak to you ever again!!!! I am NOT advocating that you live like this. It is clearly not the way to get optimal results from the band, but it has been OK for me.

Love Liz

,

Thanks for your comment but I'm with Jodie. I appreciate all that you are saying but after reading what some people consume, I cannot understand why they don't lose weight and whats more of a concern is, how do they consume their daily nutritional requirements.

Is the lack of lost weight to do with the lack of calorie consumption tricking the body into a severe case of famine mode which when released to 'normal' eating (like in Cath's case) causes an individual to blossom out 35 kgs in 12 months!!!. That is a horrendous story, Cath.

You longtime bandsters could come in here, Randall, haven't heard from you for a while. Is your weight static and what would you consume in a day?

Give we non banded some help here.

Dear Sam,

Are you serious that you haven't been told about multi-vitamins? I have always thought people who took multi-vitamins are loony, and that they were for hypochondriacs. I have always been a strong believer in the health giving properties of drinking black-current juice in winter, and having lots of vegemite. (I sound just like Nanna huh?) . However, after the op they told me about the vitamins, but of course, I ignored them because I was blowed if I was going to try and swallow that great big horse tablet.!! Anyway, about 2 months post-op I couldn't stop crying, felt totally exhausted, couldn't concentrate at work, and thought I was going into some horrible depression. Then, someone, I think on here...Karin? suggested I try the multi-vitamin. Well I had nothing to lose so I tried it. Within 4 days I was an entirely different human being. We (the profs patients) are told to go on the pluravit multi-vitamin, soft-gel capsule (for women.....if you are a woman!)...one a day. I asked recently whether more than one a day would be beneficial and I was told "No".

As for the blood tests, they again vary from doctor to doctor and the Prof does not routinely do them, but I have an entirely stuffed endocrine system, which means I have shocking cholesterol, high blood pressure, Graves disease (thryoid stuffed), high blood sugars, and was within a bees dick of getting type 2 diabetes before the op. When pregnant, I am on literally bucket loads of insulin. Anyway, as a result, I was looking like I was about to drop dead, so my doctors do a full battery of blood tests every three months, and one full 3 hour diabetes blood test once a year, which I had recently. From the point of view of my thyroid, liver, kidneys, heart, blood platelets and weight, which have all previously been shot, I got the wonderful go ahead yesterday from the specialist that there is no physical reason why I can't go ahead and try for a fifth baby!!! Hey, I never purported to be sane!

Now, don't wait here guys for the announcement. My last three were all IVF so it may never happen.....but it just might.....and I have 7 embryos in the freezer!!! I wonder which ones (if any) are pink?

That's great news Liz. I hope you get a pink one. Actually you are very lucky to have boys. My little boy is very loving, Luke 2 1/2, He says to me "I love you this much" as he holds his hands out and always smothers me with kisses. My little girl, Abbey 4 1/2, Says I am the best Mummy in the world as she climbs in my bed in the middle of the night or when she wants a special treat out of the cupboard. See the difference, girls are conditional, well mine is. Anyway that is wonderful news.

Good Luck

Actually, *all* the Prof's patients are told to take the Pluravit multi-vitamin for women...... men included!

.... and Sam said:

The Prof and his team do a battery of blood tests every twelve months, and they look for just about everything you could think of...... cholesterol, lipids, haemoglobin, calcium, liver function, iron, folic acid, sugar, vitamins and minerals.... you name it. These tests serve a dual purpose. Firstly, obviously it's in our interests to have an eye kept on our progress, as it's not uncommon with the reduced food intake to develop specific deficiencies which may need to be remedied with, say, extra vitamins or iron supplements. And secondly, all the data goes straight into Dixon's trusty little laptop computer.... we are all part of their ongoing research into the medium and long-term results associated with banding. And of course, this research is to our benefit as well, and particularly to the benefit of those who follow in our footsteps onto the operating table. I don't know what other doctors do as far as these tests go..... but they are standard for the Prof.

Dear Liz

When I spoke to the dietitian (making my first visit appointment) I asked her about the mv's she told me not to think about them till I see her on Oct 2. I wonder with the amount of food I'm eating now that I needed them now?

My Son (9) was born using G.I.F.T. IVF proceedure

Keep Well

Hi Liz

Hope you have success!!

I have a 5year old boy, and it took us 13 years to have him. Needless to say we call him our little miracle (it was a natural conception), we don't know what we did, I wish we did so we could do it again. :o) I am now hoping that after I lose weight I will fall again. But as my husband says we should count our blessings that we have 1 happy healthy child, (and I do) however it doesn't stop me from dreaming!!

Errin

Now, don't wait here guys for the announcement. My last three were all IVF so it may never happen.....but it just might.....and I have 7 embryos in the freezer!!! I wonder which ones (if any) are pink?

Actually, a lot of people say that one of the "side-effects" of the band, not spoken of much, is an unexpected pregnancy!! Wouldn't that be fabulous. I would love to have an "accident" like everyone else seems to. I think back to all those years of dogged contraception and absolute fear every month in case my period didn't come. It all seems laughable now. Mind you, 's Law being what it is, I'm sure that if I hadn't been so cautious I would have been one of the "unlucky" ones and become pregnant the first time!!

Love, Liz
