Today was my first day with my marathon running club. It was SO much fun. I

was really REALLY nervous going in, for some reason. I guess I just had this

idea that I'd get there and someone would point to me, a la end of Invasion

of the Body Snatchers, and start screaming " INTERLOPER! FAKE! PHONEY! YOU

ARE NOT A RUNNER!!! BE GONE FROM OUR SIGHT! "

Surprisingly, nobody did! I had HUGE monster butterflies, though.

HUGE...actually they may have been bats. Since it was my first time they had

me run with the other first timers two miles to find a pace group. We were

to run at a conversational pace and from that we'd be put with other runners

our speed. Well I was positive I was going to be completely last...last of

the last. I started out just feeling kind of sick, sure at any minute that

everyone would pass me up. But about 1/2 mile in I looked around and noticed

that everyone but me and two others had fallen behind. One I recognized from

the high school. She had graduated a few years ago. She was ahead of me. The

other was behind me, but moving up and soon passed me. I was thinking " Wow,

I might actually be third. I mean I know this isn't a race, but whoa. That's

pretty cool that I'm not the slowest. " By 3/4 mile I had my stride and had

stopped breathing like I might die (nerves) and was feeling pretty good.

Passed up the chick in the black shorts and was like " Whoa, might actually

be the second one in. Imagine! " Ended up running the last half a mile next

to Joanie, a former MP grad, and coming in with her. WHOA! Blew my little

pea brain! Here I was, pacing with a 20 year old former cross country star.

We both placed in the yellow group, the second fastest pace group (there

isn't anyone in the green group from today). Third was the other lady and

some guy who about died after he crossed the line. I guess, being a man, he

had to prove himself and didn't get the whole " You're going to be running

either 13.1 or 26.2 miles at a time, you do NOT SPRINT in your time trial! "

He'll be dying next week, but fortunately you can easily drop back into a

different group if you want to. I mean two miles is not that big a deal.

So 170 days until my first half marathon (although there is a half marathon

on Sept 4 that I may consider, depending on what happens with my hernias)! I

am so pumped! I got my yellow shoe tag (that I am still wearing with pride).

There was a seminar on choosing the right shoes, after the run. We got our

training schedules. We run during the week and then meet in Seattle on

Saturday morning every Saturday (although I'll be out of town next Sat,

unfortunately) and run with our groups along the Burke Gilman trail. There

will be a seminar each time (including the infamous " Gu tasting party " where

we get to try all different kinds of energy gels to decide which will work

best for us on the marathon) and every now and then we'll meet at Greenlake

during the week for a mid-week run.

I am so excited! Four weeks until my first triathlon! Eight weeks until

Danskin! 170 days until Seattle Marathon!

Tory -- You sound like you are having such a ball with this new life

your living. Not hard to tell your having real fun with this, because

the excitement comes across in every post.. butterflys, bats and

all..lol!! It is true we all think we can't do something until we

actually just go and put our best into it..and we can prove ourselves

wrong over and over....I am still laughing over your message, I can

almost envision your thinking going in.....all the best..

Thanks Kallie!

I forgot to add that I placed in the second highest pace group...which I

thought I'd be in the last. I guess I get this idea that everyone is better

at this than I am, except people who choose to walk. (Not that they aren't

better, just that since they're walking a runner will probably beat their

time, but that's not their goal.)

Tory, I wouldn't call it " vain " to say that you amaze even yourself, but

rather a newly acquired self-assurance that is the direct result of all your

hard

work! And we here all benefit from your experiences! So ....Be amazed,

woman! You deserve it!

Yeah it was awesome. Of course I realized later that I am almost double her

age, and then I felt old old old!

Thanks so much Bette! Whoda thunk...not me. I amaze even myself. (That
