This week Roy and I started a 100 day running challenge. The goal is to run

every day for 100 days, with every other day being a " low " day of at least

one mile. It's interesting once I commit myself to something like that,

especially if I have someone commited with me. First of all, I'm not going

to let HIM do better! No way! Second of all, it gets me out of the house

even though I don't feel like it. Wednesday I didn't want to run, so I said

" Okay you have to do at least a mile " and ended up doing five. Yesterday I

got home way late, but because I had this " commitment " I had to get to the

gym and run at least a mile. I ended up doing 1.5 miles of speed work. I

worked up to half a mile at a 7 min mile, which is astounding for me. Roy

ran at an 8 min mile, but I was concerned about him. That's how he does it,

though. He gets competitive and tries to keep up with me and then ends up in

pain for three days. Silly boy.

Tomorrow is my first run with my marathon training group. That should be

fun. I think it's only three miles, which is good because Sunday I run my

first 10k.

He's funny because he comes across as not being competitive at all but deep

down, he TOTALLY is! He just is careful about what he competes in. I think

that's why he liked doing the road scramble so much. He was " in charge "

because he's got this great sense of direction. I also think that's part of

why he insists he hates running, because I'm faster.

However after yesterday running his 8 min miles today we went in to run just

a mile (I'd worked out in the morning). So I did my mile and a half of

speedwork and hopped off and went to the bike. Twenty minutes later he's

still running and I'm like " What the heck? " He said later that when it

slowed down for cool down he thought " Awwww... Darn " . I said " Oh no, you

mean you're actually starting to LIKE running? " " NO! No! I hate it!! Okay,

maybe I like it a little. "

Tory,

How overweight were you when you started to run? I recently purchased a

treadmill and have been walking faithfully for 4 weeks. Occasionally I try

to jog but my feet hurt and my boobs hurt (even with a sports bra) and I

usually give up after a minute or two. Is it always like this when you run

or is it because I'm so overweight (210 lbs. at 5'6 " )? Does it get easier

the less you weigh?

I just don't know how I could ever be a jogger if it's this uncomfortable.

Walking is fine but I like to see the " calories burned " number higher and

jogging is the only way to get there - unless of course I use a high incline

and walk faster....

I think I was about 180-190 when I started and it was the same as you. I

really honestly hated it when I started, so there is hope. I did the couch

potato to five k training that I found at www.coolrunning.com. I'd say

considering that I'm a lot shorter than you are (5'3 " if I exagerrate a

little) you're probably at about the same place I was when I started.

I'd definitely work on running if I were you, but not like you will run

later on when you're thinner. (It honestly is a lot easier when you're

thin.) Do a lot of walk/running, maybe consider walk racing which has a LOT

less impact and bounce to it. (Good news is, I lost 13 inches total on my

chest. I've had bigguns and I've had smalluns, and I much prefer the

smalluns, thankyouverymuch.) As you lose weight you can work on upping your

speed and impact a bit to fit your comfort level. Once those boobs shrink

you won't have the concern with blacking out both eyes that you have now.

(Oh I just do NOT miss them. Okay, today when I put on a cute tank top that

fit me like a charm, but was lacking in the chestal area, I missed them a

little...but not too much.)

Thanks for some great advice Tory!! I am also trying to get started, not

necessarily to run races but just get healthy. I am 5' 5 " and 182 (last weigh

in I had been on anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxers for a back injury and

gained 4 pounds YUCK!! Hoping to be back down in the next couple of weeks), I

have been doing the walk/jog for a few months now but never really got the speed

up very much, I think 5mpn is the fastest that I have been able to do very long.

Of course I am jogging at 4 mph, so I guess that isn't too bad. LOL!

That's not too bad at all! Heck, look at it this way...only 40% of adults

exercise on a regular basis. That makes you more dedicated than 60% of the

adults out there. (And I bet of those 40%, at least 25% of them lie...who

wants to admit that they don't exercise on a regular basis when asked?) Most

people won't do it, so when you do it, that's incredible.

I don't know if that makes sense, but sometimes when I'm in a funk and don't

want to exercise I think " I'm choosing to do something that most people

won't choose to do. That's why this works. That's why I'm not going to punk

out on this because I am NOT like most people. I am the exception to the

rule. " (Gotta give myself those pep talks sometime.)

Okay off to my 10k! I'm nervous! Why? ACK!

That's so funny! is sort of the same way. He insisted he hated

running, but I think it was because I've always been faster and can

run farther. (The only reason for that is because I actually get out

and TRAIN by running several times a week, he will MAYBE run once a

week and then want to be able to PERFORM in a race situation.) We did

a 5K last weekend and finished together in a really good time and

he's decided he likes racing...hmmm, could be because he didn't

finish half a mile behind me? : ) If he would put in the time, he

would totally be faster than me.

That is Roy to a T! He had a ball today. He bettered his best time and felt

great about. He insisted he " hated every minute of it " with a big grin on

his face. He likes it and he knows it!

My legs and feet used to hurt after a short while on the treadmill, but

once I started running in my Nike Shox, the pain went away. I think my

New Balances are made more for cross-country running and just didn't

work as well on the super-flat surface. Good shoes can make a big

difference!
