Guest guest
Okay, I'm 36 years old, not in very good shape (better than some, I guess), and pretty darn overweight. I'm interested in taking up some martial arts now. Why? I dunno. It's cool, I guess. ;-) Has anyone got any ideas for how to track down a martial arts class for adults where I won't feel all that embarrassed? -- Sláinte, S. Guest guest
Tae Kwon Do is a lot of fun. I'm 31 and my hubby just turned 40 and we were both out of shape when we started last year. It's was a bit intimidating at first but only because we were new and didn't know what to expect. There are people from 4 to 60 years old in our classes. It's a ton of fun. My advice would be to look in the phone book and see if there are classes near you that are taught by Olympic medalists. There are lots of schools around our area (Portland OR) and the best schools are the ones that are run by Gold medalists. They just seem to be more structured and more disciplined I guess. I don't really know how to put it into words but the instructors and students just seem to be more skilled and more impressive in the schools run by Olympic athletes. HTH, Kris Martial Arts? Guest guest
Is there a 's Tae Kwon Do in your neck of the woods? I know there are several in these parts, but I don't know if has any. But they're an *excellent* place to go. They're always getting accolades for being the best instructors. I went there several years back, but due to job situations, had to stop going. The dojo that I went to on Florin, the morning ones were mostly adults and then the evening ones were a mix of kids (about 12 and up) and adults. But they make you feel welcome. They will let you come in for a free class or two, before commiting so you can see if it's for you. They'll do a 1:1 and go over some of the basic moves. And if you need additional help, you can let them know and they'll work with you 1:1 if need be. I'm not sure how much it is, but they also offer kickboxing a couple of times a week and that'll help you with your moves as well. Kozar's is another one that comes to mind, but they're Karate, I do believe. Do you have Comcast? They come on one of the public access channels on Comcast. If so, you could check out what they do. It's mostly demonstration and not a true class. But it'll give you an idea of what you'll learn.
