Guest guest
We just had our long awaited 1st appt. with our local orthotist. We found out our daughter Avery (5 months on Sunday) has mild plagio (6- 8mm) which we knew, and mod to severe brachy, which we did not know. I guess I was more concerned with the flatness to the side of her head than the wideness. They use the STARband there. The orthotist said brachy was the harder of the two to treat. However, she also suggested that Avery is still old enough to see quite a bit of improvement over the next month by repositioning, so we opted to wait to band her for another month. I am hoping to see improvement, but don't really think we will, as we have done some repo in the last month and I haven't seen much difference. The ortho did say sometimes it's hard to see, but the measurements would always tell the story. What are opinions of some of you out there? Did anyone else wait another month to see if they had change, and will we loose anything by waiting until she is 6 months old instead of going ahead with it now? Avery has no assymetry and looks good other than the one side of her head, I think anyway. I'd love to give her the opportunity to correct some on her own, but will the brachy correct by repo? She is currently rolling over and sleeps on her tummy mostly, I think that is her new preferred position. Thanks for any input. The ortho said if we got home and changed our mind to call her and they would get us in for the casting, so it's not like we HAVE to wait another month. Holly Avery-almost 5 mos. Guest guest
I wouldn't wait if she is moderate to severe brachy. Again this is just my personal opinion. Maybe if it was just the mild plagio I would wait. If you do decided to wait you should still get good correction at 6 months. Personally I would get the band at the first opportunity but remeber I was late banding my son so of course I have regrets. Guest guest
Holly, I wouldn't wait. Since you are dealing with brachy and plagio that is a complicated case. You need all the growth you can get. Call back and get it now. If you had said you were seeing great progress with repo I would encourage you to continue but with little progress and her age I would go to the band. na, DOC Grad X2 Feb 04, Tort Resolved Kiersten, DOC Grad Apr 06 (and CT web star), Tort Resolved www.thefilyaws.com/plagio/plagio.html > > We just had our long awaited 1st appt. with our local orthotist. Guest guest
Hi Bobbi- I have kindof been thinking the same thing on the repo with the Brachy. I can see where that would be hard to get much correction by just the repo. We believe Avery may have had a slight case of tort because she would always look to one side no matter what we did, but we worked really hard to keep her attention to the other side and now she has great range of motion. I have no idea what CVA is, but on the brachy, the ortho said she was 91%. I had her write all her measurements down for me, I'd never remember otherwise. So your opinion is that we go ahead and just band her and not wait? The ortho said we wouldn't be loosing anything by waiting another month but she would do whatever we wanted. I know in my heart she will have to have the band anyway, but I guess I was holding out some hope! Thanks for the measurements on your son. What did you do when he was in his carseat when you were trying to repo? That is about the only concern I have. She does tummy time well, so we just do that or hold her. Thanks Holly Avery 5 mos > > You are in the exact place we were 3 months ago. I hate to say it > but the repo did little for us. Of course the tort makes it harder > to repo. Guest guest
Hi, Our daughter has severe brachy with very little asym(4mm) We saw the plastic surgeon when she was just over 4 months, and he told us it was our choice to band now or try repro and wait. We decided to band then and had her band 2 days after she turned 5 months. I'm really glad we did. We've had good improvement so far, but we have a long way to go. They said it can take up to 6 months for her brachy, and starting earlier is better. Good luck with your decision, and don't worry about the helmet - its really pretty easy to adjust to. -christine mom to sydney/6 mo/ brachy/ starband 5-31-06 > > We just had our long awaited 1st appt. with our local orthotist. Guest guest
Hi Holly, I would not wait either. Like the pp posters say, they combo would make me want to start as soon as possible. From what I have heard, it is ideal to start treatment between 4 - 6 months. Guest guest
Thanks to all who took time to encourage me to go ahead and get the casting and the ball rolling on this process. I called the ortho today and we are getting Avery casted next Wednesday the 19th at 9am. I think we're ready. I am concerned about the brachy part of this more than the plagio. Are we looking at a longer treatment time for that? Is it difficult to get good correction for both the brachy and plagio at the same time? I'll let you know how the casting goes. I have a feeling she'll do pretty good. She's pretty laid back most of the time!
