Here is an explanation of the STARscanner results:

(Level 3 measurements)

· Cephalic Ratio = Cranial Breadth / Cranial Length. An ideal ratio

would be 0.78 or 78%. Brachycephaly Severity - normal - 73-83%; moderate -

83.1% to 87.9%; severe - 88% and higher. Scaphocephaly Severity - normal -

73-83%; moderate - 68.1% to 72.9%; severe - 68% and below.

· Radial Symmetry Index (RSI) = from the front of the head, 15°

segments are measured and added. The addition of the right side segments is

subtracted to the addition of the left side segments. An ideal ratio would

be left side – right side = 0 (<30 mm normal)

· Oblique Cranial Maximum and Minimum = Ideally one is looking to

have the maximum line vertical and the minimum line horizontal.

· Oblique at 30 deg (US1 and US2) = Length of diagonal taken at 30°

on each side (30° corresponds to the corner of the eye). The subtraction of

US1 and US2 gives an indication of the asymmetry of the head. An asymmetry

between 0-3 mm is normal; <6 mm is very mild; 6-10 mm is mild; 10-15 mm is

moderate; 15+ mm is severe

· Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4 volumes: Draws vertical and horizontal lines

centered on middle point of head. Measures volume of each corner starting

front left, then front right, back right and back left.

· Anterior Symmetry Ratio: looks at front of head and divides front

left volume with front right volume. An ideal ratio would be 1

· Posterior Symmetry Ratio: looks at back of head and divides back

right volume with back left volume. An ideal ration would be 1

· Overall Symmetry Ratio: Divides left side with right side. An

ideal ratio would be 1

· Upper facial left and upper facial right: Measures the length

between the centre of the front to each left and right ear. This

corresponds to a cranial bone and determines the position of the ear.

· Upper Facial Symmetry Ratio: Divides Upper Facial Right with Upper

Facial Left. An ideal ratio would be 1

· Cranial Vault Asymmetry Index (CVAI): the percentage difference in

plagio, (100%-(US1/US2)). 0-3 mm normal

· Ear Offset - this number seems to be very subjective because the ortho

places stickers near the ears that the machine picks up to take this

measurement. If they are placed differently each time the number will come

out differently

Re: Starscanner numbers...+ Questions about 2nd Helmet +

Switching Providers

Our son has completed 14 weeks in his STARband. At his appt on

Friday, his orthotists suggested that he would be done in about 3

weeks. However, he still has marked assymetry (i.e., you can

totally see the flat area, even though it has improved dramatically)

and I am not comfortable with this course. I think that she made

the suggestion with the assumption that moving to a second helmet

would be a difficult road to take give his improvements (assuming

he's sort of close to normal, and that insurance would not pay, and

that we were unlikely to fork out the funds to get a second helmet

if insurance did not pay). I had another conversation and she

agreed that another helmet would certainly help. So I have

scheduled a follow-up with Drew's doctor and his orthotist to

discuss.

My problem is that I feel like he's not " normal " yet.

The measurement changes in his head to the latest laser can are not

even that drastic -

at section 3:

change in head circumference = 8 mm growth over the 14 wks (maybe we

did not catch a big growth spurt yet?)

cranial breadth (m-L) went from 141.5 to 140.2

cranial length (A-P) went from 161.3 to 166.7

cephalic ratio went from .877 to .841 (isn't .76-.78 'normal'?) radial

symmetry index went from 56 to 41 (isn't normal 20-25?)

oblique - diagonal 1 at 30 deg went from 148.6 to 154.7

oblique - diagonal 2 at 30 deg went from 163.1 to 165.2 (difference went

from 15 mm to 11 mm)

oblique cranial max at 62.2 deg went from 135.4 to 136.5 oblique cranial min

at 18.6 deg went from 164.3 to 169.4

levels 2 to 8:

Q1 volume (A/L went from 284.7 to 304.3

Q2 volume (A/R) went from 294.9 to 319.7 (Q2-Q1 diff went from 10 to

15 - is this bad?)

Q3 volume (P/R) went from 241.2 to 268.9

Q4 volume (P/L) went from 297.4 to 312.9 (Q4-Q3 diff went from 56 to

44 - good but certainly not good enough, right?)

overall symmetry ratio went from .888 to .906

Cranial Vault Assymetry Index (CVAI) went from 8.9 to 6.3 (but I've

read that some of you said 2 to 3 was " normal " )

So...I am feeling like these numbers say don't stop now. Do any of

you agree? I can't stand the thought of stopping merely because he

has grown out of the helmet.

Second, I would like to hear from those of you who switched from one

provider to another for the second helmet. Anyone go from DOCband

to STARband? And to those who went from STARband to DOCband, why

the decision to switch? How about you who went for two STARbands?

Was there success?

Third, I have seen some comments that PT helped w/ the assymetry of

the ears. This is a big concern of mine, too. The STARband

certainly did nothing.

Thanks for your input.
