Hi Syd,

I didnt have to have that test prior to surgery but others may have.

If can get this op for $3000 then I would say GO FOR IT!!!!!!.....LOL.

I was about $7000 out of pocket and I know of others who have paid about

that too.

Hi Kim,

Thanks for the info.

I have three more weeks to wait before I find the answers to my questions

when I see the surgeon, but, the curiosity is killing me!!!!

Oh well, good things come to those who wait I suppose.......

helen, i was one of the lucky ones, my blue cross blue shield insurance paid

the doc and the hospital. the ony bill i rec'd was from a second doc? i am

still questioning this bill. although it sounds like most of you co-banders

are from australia, switz, etc here in the states the op is still considered

in the " research " phase therefore things are quite different. geez i feel

petty, while you guys are paying out of pocket im squawking about travel

expenses. although i guess, since we are still " researching " here, i was

under the impression i ws a guinea pig, and that the company producing the

band here will reap the benefit$ of the people in my groups. anywho, there is

still expenses to be had since i am among that group flying to another state

to be filled. i continue to thx you all who have made me realize that i did

in fact do the right thing for me and am now on my way to the next stage of my

research. also i must admit i too do not gain weight like i did in the past

even if i did chose to lose in a more slow way than most others in this group.

Dear Syd and Marie,

As you know I just had my op done on Jan 25. I have top private health insurance

cover. My costs out of pocket after Medicare and Health Insurance cover has been

about $2600. Sure do not like this gap stuff at all!! It would have cost about

$9000 if no health insurance. No I did not have to have an endoscopy. What is

that?

Grace

Endoscopy

Hi all,

I heard a rumour that you have to undergo an endoscopy prior to gastric

banding is this true?

Also when I booked in at the surgeons I was trying to find out how much the

procedure cost. The receptionist told me that if I had the op done on Medicare

I would have to contribute $3,000.00, but if I was in a private fund I would

have to contribute $1,000.00 (I am in S.G.I.C.).

I would be interested to know if this sounds right? As much as it's not

nice to talk about the cost, as the surgery will still have to be done, I would

just like to know what I am getting myself in for. A relative of a friend who

had the op done on Medicare said she only had to pay $700.00. I am confused and

am wondering if the total coat of the op before any medicare rebate is $3,000.00

(I hope so).

I await your answers...........

Syd............

Grace, thanks for the info.

An endoscopy is a look down your throat into your stomach with a tube that has a

camera on the end.

Not a big deal really but something else to ponder about.

Laureen,

I did not have one before mine.

endoscopy

Hi There

I was just wondering if everyone normally has an endoscopy before their

surgery. I am to be banded July 5th and my doctor has made no mention of

having one.

Laureen, the surgeon I see and his clinic don't routinely do

endoscopies. I had one though because I keep getting reflux already

beofre I've been banded. They discovered I have a Hiatus Hernia wich

is fairly common. You have nothing to fear it didn't hurt or

anything, just a little groggy after the anesthetic.

Laureen...

Hi..I just wanted to re-assure you about the surgery. I am in Perth

and was banded in January of this year and did not have an endoscopy

prior to my surgery. My assumptions as to why the doctor didnt

request this for me is because I am only 22 years old, and hence

there should be relatively few complications in a young 'healthy'

person. At this age I would hope that I don't have any stomach

ulcers!! I was also only a border-line case (I was the lower end of

the BMI recommended for surgery, but for mental health reasons the

doctor agreed to the surgery...and he could also see me putting more

weight on with every pregnancy I have) and hence there are fewer

complications with people who are carrying less excess weight (fewer

layers of tissue to get thru etc, less pressure on the heart). If you

are still unhappy with these reasons I suggest you ask your doctor.

It is your right to be fully informed about the procedure.

Anyways, good luck for your op...you'll be fine.

187cm/128kg/ banded 10/1/01

Now, 108kg.

P.S. I have just completed my nursing degree. Yipee!!

Laureen,

I didn't have one but I did have to have a 'barium swallow' test to check if

I had a hernia, I think I would have prefered the endoscopy but didn't know

you could have that instead.

Best wishes

Kell

in the mean time (I haven't lost enough weight yet to go on TV!!!!aaaarrrrrr
