Hi Suzanne

Thanks for providing such a full response....I found myself laughing at the

Jo Brand joke and it is heartening that despite the trials and tribulations

that we have to endure that our humour can still be retained!

Yes, Mr Fiennes can be charming but his low opinion of overweight women is

very evident....his attitude is not entirely untypical in his profession and

frankly I was expecting it!....In order to counter this, when I first began

communicating with him via email I made a point of informing him that I was

a post graduate (something I am not in the habit of doing, because it's

neither here nor there, but I needed him to be aware that whilst his

intellectual capacity might exceed mine I was close on his heels).

Consequently,

by the time he met me he was able to comment on how intelligent I was!

*ick!* It is such a pity that a surgeon should be so dismissive of the

women (and no doubt men) that his is attempting to help.

The NHS is an option that is open to me....but to be frank given the most

recent developments there is not guarantee that I will utilise it...I'll be

interested to find out how Janet got on in France and then I shall make a

decision. For some reason when it comes to WLS surgery I am, paradoxically,

in a rush and yet not so....how weird is that?

I am sure that Mr Fiennes is highly respected in his field and what he

writes about you to other medical professionals will be taken as

gospel....regardless of its validity He has, for his own reasons, labelled

you an 'out of control' overweight woman, to other medical

professionals...this label will be hard to shake....even if you go to

another surgeon for a second opinion s/he will always refer back to Mr

Fiennes for his assessment...just out of good practice....I'm sure that I'm

not telling you anything that you haven't thought through already...

Thanks for giving me your phone number I'll definitely be in touch!

With warmest regards

Ronke

Dale - Congratulations on your weight loss and glad to hear you are

doing really well... You will be able to eat a little more during the

pureed stage as it goes through the band a lot easier, just be

careful you don't eat to over full while it's all still healing...

Dianne - You are also a success story, don't loose sight of the fact

you have lost around 70 plus Kilos since you've had the band (if I

remember correctly) ... That's absolutely HUGE and try not to loose

sight of it during the challenging times...

Kacey - Congratulations also on your weight loss and I'm really glad

to hear your husband is progressing well thru the whole process.

of Ipswich - Glad to hear they have found the reason and a

solution to your band problems, it won't be long before you are a

looser again..

of Tas - Hope things are sorted out for you real soon and I

would go and get a second opinion, it can't hurt only help..

- You wrote " It sounds as though not many people are

actually happy with the band. I am seriously considering it, but

don't want to go through with it if it won't work " .

, even though I've got to have the band removed I loved it for

the first 10 months ( I lost 40kgs) and it only didn't work for me

because my esophageus is too weak (the band worked perfectly, just I

don't). Also, this group is only a very small percentage of people

who have had this operation, my surgeon alone has done over 900 and

he says he has only had to remove around 40 (and some of them were

because they were big sweet eaters). I know there are some, who are

a little sceptical about the success rate of the band but In my

humble opinion, I don't believe my surgeon would continue doing this

procedure if it had a high failure rate, as he re-operates most of

the time for schedule fee so he wouldn't be making much money at all,

in fact I wouldn't be surprised if sometimes he looses ( and at the

end of the day, it is a business)...

One more thing - There are a lot on this group who are very happy

with the band, and it is because of this reason that they have such a

full life now they don't get time to post very often.. (people with

problems and newbies need a lot more support than those that are

breezing through)..

If you need more success stories, find a surgeon and ask them to give

you some names of people who you can talk to. I have met a least 10

people over the last 12months who are not apart of this site and are

very happy with the band (mainly from my surgeons waiting room and

one on the day of my op. She was actually visiting her mother and

came over to talk to me when she found out why I was in hospital) .

Good Luck with your decision and if I can help in any way please feel

free to ask ( I won't be able to reply for at least a week though)

****

Sorry if some of these replies are a little late but you know how it

is... Hopefully I will be posting from the other side next time...

Cheers

Amy Mac
