Guest guest
Hi everyone, While I wait to hear back from our insurance (we should hear any day now!), I am just plagued with different worries. I guess the closer we get to actually casting and getting the band I am becoming more nervous. For example, my son is such a snuggler and I realized last night that I don't know that I will be able to hold him close with his head on my chest the way he loves to cuddle. I realize that is a small sacrifice to make for the long term benefits of a corrected head shape though. Here's one new worry though that I wanted to get some feedback on - how does the DOC band affect nursing? My son is only 4 months old and I plan to nurse as long as possible due to a family history of food and environmental allergies. (Plus it's free food for the little guy!!) Thanks! , momma to Everett (4 months, left tort and right plagio)
Guest guest
My little guy turns 5 months today, and I went ahead and scheduled his casting for tomorrow afternoon (even though still no word from insurance). I don't want to miss out on much more of this prime time to have him in the DOC band. All that said, I really appreciate the responses on cuddling and nursing - I imagine we will just find ways to cuddle that will work with the band. It's funny because if you had told me I couldn't put Everett in the band I would be VERY upset, but for some reason the thought of now putting him in the band is hard too. I am also ashamed that I worry about what my acquaintances (not friends or family, but general acquaintances) will say about all of this. We should have the band by May 25th which means I can report back by late May/early June on my cuddling and nursing experiences. Anyways, off to PT and thanks again for your responses. , momma to Everett (5(!!!) mo, left tort and right plagio) > > Hi everyone, > While I wait to hear back from our insurance (we should hear any day > now!), I am just plagued with different worries. Guest guest
We went ahead with the band prior to hearing from insurance...SO glad we did because we captured a huge growth spurt. We had to appeal but only 1x and because of the great sample appeals here it didn't take much brain power on my part. We were reimbursed 80%. Hopefully, you have a good experience with being reimbursed or paid without having to appeal. 10.5 month son, DOC band W > > > > Hi everyone, > > While I wait to hear back from our insurance (we should hear any day > > now!), I am just plagued with different worries. Guest guest
- I posted a response to this about a day or two ago to someone else here I believe, as it was a discussion going on. The snuggling will still be able to go on! You can kiss the tops of their heads, by the opening, you can kiss their cheeks, mouth, chins etc. And of course the rest of their bodies!! I love to rub DJs head when the helmet is off. Don't stress, it's really not so bad. And for a few months of time, it's so worth it! My son only has about a month to go- he's had his helmet on for 7 weeks now I think. So, the time flies!! Also, I hope you got my other responses to you over the last week, I know I left you a few- since you are a fellow Michigander! Guest guest
- Yes, I take DJ for walks with the helmet. It's funny, I think sometimes people may think I'm just an overprotective mom, putting something like a bike helmet on for safety, LOL. Sometimes I leave it on for a walk, other times I use that as my hour a day to have it off, since I dont' give him a bath every day (his skin is sensative & he has eczema). Esp. if it is a hotter day. I do usually keep it on 23hrs a day. Maybe about once a week I'll have it off for a longer outting for 3 hours or so. One reason I keep it on is because when it's off he itches his head so badly, no matter what I do! Thus, at least if it's on he can't scratch up his skin, he's known for leaving scabs, even though I trim his nails twice a week!! As it is he scratches at his ear since he can't get his forehead and it's got scabs on it. Sometimes I don't necessarily want to keep it off for a longer time, but here and there he's gotten some red spots or places he scratched himself that wouldn't heal, so I had to give it some air or time and had it off for a half day or all night etc. Other than that I try to be pretty strict, that way we're done asap!! DJ actually did remarkably well sleeping! He wasn't supposed to, but when we were out for a walk on day 2 he fell asleep with it on. I knew from there that he'd be ok with the sleeping, and he was. I did dress him lighter during the day and at night for the first couple of weeks. Even now, his head still sweats in the helmet, I guess there's nothing I can do about it. But, it's not bad and doesn't seem to bug him. For night I kept him in a onesie the last few nights (with a recieving blanket), and then when he got up to feed in teh middle of the night I added socks or pants, depending on how cool the house got. We haven't bothered to turn the air on yet. When it was a bit cooler I had him in lightweight pjs and that was it. Or a long sleeve onesie. You kind of just have to figure it out, see what works for your baby. Test it and see if she feels cold, hot etc. I love the name Noah! Guest guest
- DJ is going to be 8 months old this Monday, he was about 6 1/2mo old when we got the helmet. He has positional plagio, meaning it was caused from him laying on surfaces like a carseat, swing, cradle etc. Not from birth. As for the onesies, I keep his legs bare if it's really warm inside, like if I'm wearing shorts- which I was last night. But, then right before I go to bed I cover him up with a receiving blanket. Then if I get up to feed him at night I check his feet/arms/legs and if he feels cool I'll add pants or socks etc. I pretty much dress him like I would myself, a little lighter, but I also get cold easy. Like I said, it all depends on the baby, so you'll just have to experiment to see what works for you. Glad to hear things are going well so far. Ya, it's a hot one out there today!! I try to remember to air out the car a little before I put him in, suppose I'll have to do that anyway, helmet or not, for summer! Guest guest
I keep wondering about the blankets. Do your babies every cover their faces? I guess I worry too much. We've never given our baby a blanket (even really thin) because I'm afraid of SIDS. > > > >> > > > > >>> > > > > > >>> > > > > > >>> > > > > > >>> > > > > > >>> > > Hi everyone, > > > >>> > > While I wait to hear back from our insurance (we should > > hear any > > > > day > > > >>> > > now!), I am just plagued with different worries. Guest guest
- How old is your baby? I think by the time DJ was about 4-5 months I gave him a blanket. I tucked it around him, so it stayed in place pretty well. He didn't start moving around a whole lot in his crib until the last two months maybe. He hated his tummy and I think that's why. Anyway, once he reached that age he was able to " play " with the blanket some, you know, grab it, snuggle it, etc. I think once it was over his head. You've got to remember too that the blankets still have breathing room, just like if you covered your head with a blanket. Anyway, I put him to bed with one now, he's 8 months and he is able to remove it if he doesn't want it. However, I also am in the habit of going in to check on him once he sounds like he's asleep and will often straighten the blanket out, like if it's not covering his legs and it's cool etc. If your baby is 5 months + I don't see anything to worry about. Plus, unless I'm incorrect, technically SIDS is not caused by suffocation- it's not something that is preventable. In fact recently a study came out that they believe it's something in a babies brain or some part of their system, or lacking that causes their breathing to stop. Guest guest
My son is definitely old enough (he is almost 11 months) and has the head control and would be able to move the blank. I just think that I would NOT sleep well if he had a blanket even though I am sure he'd be fine. Ya, I think you are right that SIDS isn't preventable; however, our ped. has said not to use a blanket because of SIDS. We have a TV monitor...our son would wake up if we went in to check him. My son was swaddled till 7months, got the band at 7.5 and started sleeping on his tummy. I mention that because you said that your son diddn't start moving a whole lot until recently maybe because he hated his tummy...I think that is the reason my son didn't wiggle out of his swaddling blankets. We broke him of the habit! It wasn't that he was getting out. Anyways, thanks for the tips. lisa > > > > > >> > > > > > > >>> > > > > > > > >>> > > > > > > > >>> > > > > > > > >>> > > > > > > > >>> > > Hi everyone, > > > > > >>> > > While I wait to hear back from our insurance (we > should > > > > hear any > > > > > > day > > > > > >>> > > now!), I am just plagued with different worries. Guest guest
Happy Mothers Day to everyone, a day late! , I agree that sometimes it's a no win situation. I'm like you in that I try not to worry about every little thing. I actually thought I would worry a lot more about SIDS and other things before I had DJ, but now that I have him, I really don't worry much. When he was first born I was extra careful with things, I bought several of the sleepsacks and was going to use ONLY those. However, he likes the blankets more at this point, and this way he can pull them off if he wants. But I agree the sack is a good idea for those who worry about the blankets!! As for tangling up in a lightweight blanket and cutting off circulation or whatever, I honestly dont' see how that could happen! The receiving blankets aren't very big....Oh well, guess you never know, but I think as the babies get older they can do so much more for themselves and this is great since they can help themselves if they need to in some instances. Oh, and good news, probably 2 more weeks and DJ will be done with the helmet!! Did your ortho keep askign if Wyatt was sleeping on his tummy?? Mine said that since DJ is still sleepign on his back, that they'd recommend he keeps it on the next 2 weeks. He said usually they discontinue when they are on their tummies?? Guest guest
there is definitely no reason to take the band off if your baby switches to tummy sleeping. you still want to redirect growth to the flat area until the head is " fixed " or there is no room in the band (and you may still want a 2nd band). sydney slept on her tummy the last month or two in her band and got a lot of correction toward the end. -christine sydney 16 mo starband grad > > > > > > >> > > > > > > > >>> > > > > > > > > >>> > > > > > > > > >>> > > > > > > > > >>> > > > > > > > > >>> > > Hi everyone, > > > > > > >>> > > While I wait to hear back from our insurance (we > > should > > > > > hear any > > > > > > > day > > > > > > >>> > > now!), I am just plagued with different worries. Guest guest
- Coincidentally, I think I worried and fussed more over DJ while he slept when he was in the room with us! Maybe because he was there and it was easier to just look over and check on him. The first week or so after we put him in his crib in his room, was a hard seperation. Even though I was looking forward to the fact of having a little space, privacy, etc. But, I'm glad I did it then, because it seems the longer the time, the harder the seperation, for me anyway.
