Guest guest
Hi Naomi, I don't really think her head is mild. There are a few problem areas - the dent, and the bulge (that shows from the back). I think it is very likely that she would benefit from a helmet. if you look at 's recent post, you can see that her son's head had a dent too, and looks much better now that he has been in the docband for a while. Plagiocephaly/message/156923 I think Starband would also work well, but make sure the ortho has good experience with banding. At your ped appointment you should request a referral to a cranio facial specialist. that would probably be the best way to get 's head looked at. some do CT scan to rule out early fusion of the skull. I think you definitely have your child's best interest in mind. for some reason crooked heads are okay and crooked teeth are not - since most people don't question getting braces. She is very young now and this is the best time to resolve the problems with her head shape. I'm sure she will be happy you did it when she is older. This group is great for support and questions. -christine sydney 17 mo starband grad > > Hello everyone, > I'm pretty sure my 3.5 month old daughter, , has some molding from > her time in utero. Guest guest
Hi Naomi, I looked at the pics and I don't think you are out of your mind. We went to CT (only because that is what our ped. recommended and I didn't know about any other bands). I would think if you have a good ortho you could get good correction from the Star Band. As far as doctor's banding mild cases, it depends. We kept being told to wait. At 6.5 months, I had an RN friend that asked if our ped. was okay with our son's head shape. At that point, I convinced my husband that we should go back to CT (we had gone at 3 months because he had a strong preference for looking left...he was a candidate for banding then but I wanted to ask the ped. at 4 month well check). SO needless to say, we went to CT at 6.5 months. They sent the request for the script to our ped. I called my ped. and told them that CT sent the request and that we wanted to band. My ped. sent the script that same day. I don't know if Star band does free evals. but I would definitely take in. We banded because I didn't want to risk potential medical problems that could be linked to plagio or teasing or glasses not fitting right, etc. is young enough that you could try repositioning for a month or two. There are some ladies that have tips for that. Good luck and keep us posted. lisa 1year old, DOC graduate > Are doctors willing to band only mild cases? > Do STARbands offer the same amount of correction as a DOC > band? > Can STARbands fix problems other than just a flat spot on the > back of the head? > > I would totally take her to a Cranial Tech office if I could, but we > live at least 9 hours from the closest one(we live in NM), and that > would require my husbands cooperation(we have two other children, and he > isn't really convinced that she has a problem). > > Would you mind looking at some photos of 's head and telling me if > I'm out of my mind? Guest guest
I would not say I recognize her headshape as textbook Plagio/Brachy but I would definitely say there is some molding issues that I would want looked at. Almost all of us have had to push to see a specialist so don't feel funny about it. > > Hello everyone, > I'm pretty sure my 3.5 month old daughter, , has some molding from > her time in utero. Guest guest
Naomi, Let me clarify, I would agree with and Jen. I don't think 's case is mild. I would also say she is probably moderate/severe. I do think she'd benefit from the band especially if repositioning for a month or two doesn't work. I wouldn't recommend waiting more than a month or two if you do decide to wait. PS: My son's assymetry was only the left back side and was not that bad (8mm) and we banded. I am SO glad we did. Even now, his head is not perfect but is SO much better than it was. > > Hi Naomi, > > I looked at the pics and I don't think you are out of your mind. Guest guest
I just about cried when I read all of your responses. Thank you so much! It really is nice to know I'm not seeing things when it comes to 's head. And that I'm NOT a bad mom for wanting to fix it! It really is in 's best interest. I showed all of your responses to my husband, and he finally agreed that we need to do something. So thanks again! We are going to bring it up with the ped and hopefully she will agree we need to go down that road. I just want to thank you again, without your opinions I'm not sure I would have the guts to really fight for this, I was just too unsure. I will definitely be keeping in touch with you guys! Guest guest
Hi Naomi, is so cute! I love her little tongue sticking out in that one pic. I think you are right to be concerned. While she doesn't have the classic flattening that you often see here, she does have significant molding. I think that factoring in her facial asymmetries that she'd probably be classified as severe. My kids were both born with misshapen heads for severe molding--Hannah is 4 now and was banded, and Jack is now 5 months and has been banded for 6 weeks. He had severe plagio and a significant dent over his left ear. I saw linked you to my recent post with his progress pictures. I was concerned about his dent and asked about it very early on. We saw a craniofacial specialist when Jack was two months and got our helmet script. The inutero stuff can be harder to fix, so the earlier you start the better. They told us they weren't sure the helmet would help the dent, but thankfully it did. They also told us we should get him banded by four months because of that dent. I'd definitely get a referral to a neurosurgeon or craniofacial doc ASAP if I were you. Sometimes they do xrays or CTscans to rule out premature fusing of the sutures if they're concerned. I wouldn't wait the two weeks to see your ped, I'd call and tell them you want a referral now. It can take weeks to get in to see specialists. Just tell them you'd feel better getting a second opion because you're worried about it. I'd be very interested to hear what they say about her cheekbones too, as far as if they think a band will correct it. It's hard to do this stuff when your family is not on board. Have you shown them the pictures you just posted? Sometimes seeing it in 2d like that vs 4d real life is eye opening. Good luck with everything and please keep us posted. , mom to Hannah (DOCgrad) and Jack (DOCbanded) http://hannahsnoggin.typepad.com > > Hello everyone, > I'm pretty sure my 3.5 month old daughter, , has some molding from > her time in utero.
