Guest guest
Our child was recently diagnosed with Plagiocephaly. We are trying to determine whether to go with the Danamr Cranial Helmet or with a DOC band or another brand of a band. Does anyone know of any statistics or studies that compare the results of the helmet versus the band. Thanks, Steve
Guest guest
I would personally recommend any one of the active bands - DOCband, STARband or Hanger Band. Active bands have pressure points which " hold " the prominent areas while " redirecting " growth in the flat areas. They are fit very close to the head in the prominent areas and thus need to be closely monitored. The flat areas have room to grow but not a lot and these areas are shaved out usually at each appt. They apply a gentle pressure. Because the band is active you will see correction much sooner. Passive bands such as Danmar do not hold in any area. They fit looser and totally rely on growth to round the head. The active uses growth and the redirection from the pressure points. Hope this helps! Guest guest
Hi Steve, I don't have any studies to site, but personally I would pick the Docband. from what I know Danmar is a passive helmet and relies on more growth than the Docband. some people see good results with Danmar too, but I would expect to get more correction from a docband, which is an active band. Also cranial tech has a very good reputation since they do only banding. other orthos may do many different things in their practice and will have different levels of expertise in banding babies. if you do go with danmar definitely make sure the ortho is very experienced since this is a huge factor in getting results with any band. your insurance and location are other considerations. we had a starband (From orthomerica) with very good results. the ortho was very experience, the cost was covered 100% by our insurance and required no travel. for us that was an easy decision. let us know what you decide. -christine > > Our child was recently diagnosed with Plagiocephaly. Guest guest
Thanks, that helps. I’m happy to hear that he’s still doing well. I think we will check out the Cranial Tech in Cleveland. Is there a reason why you went to Chicago instead of Cleveland? He was casted on his 6 month birthday, and got his band a couple of weeks later. He wore it for a a little over 4 months. He graduated a little before his 1st b-day, and took his first steps on his b-day. His headshape was a little different than most on this board (long and narrow, called scaphocephalic in shape). He did not have fused sutures. He's 7 now, and is doing well. I'm sure that whatever choice you make for the type of molding device will be fine. Guest guest
- I live in Warren MI. My son DJ has a Becker Cranial Helmet, which is similar to the Danmar helmet. I looked at each in my research, as there is no Cranial Technologies in MI. Both have many locations. I know for Danmar you could go to one of the hospitals in downtown Detroit, I forget which, or I want to say in Ann Arbor. I personally chose Becker because the location was easily accessable to me and I found my initial interview with their office impressive. They are located in Berkley, near Royal Oak. It looks like it was your husband Steve who posted asking about Danmar vs. Docband. I just wanted to share my experience so far, in that, I have found my son is having the same sorts of results with his helmet, although coined, " passive " , as children with " active " helmets. In my personal research, I found nothing that said one brand was better than any other. Actually, to the contrary, I found that it made no difference in brand or price, to quote one article that I found through google. What would make a difference is the age of the child and severity. My son got his helmet at 6 months (our doc was keeping an eye on his flat spot at 2 mo) and is currently 7 1/2 mo. His plagio is mild/moderate. In the 5 weeks he's had his helmet, he's half way to where they would like him to be with his results. My ortho said that he's never had a baby in a helmet longer than 9 weeks. And this is a " passive " helmet. Again, I'm assuming they must be mainly treating younger babies, and not those who are a bit older where their bones are " harder " etc. Feel free to contact me with any questions. I know all of the info out there can be so confusing, especially when many articles contradict one another!
